Most fatherhood failure isn’t dramatic. It’s slow withdrawal. Working late. Phone in hand. Patience gone. Presence fading. Families rarely collapse overnight. They erode quietly. Stay engaged.

@hunvreus Also focusing music, movie soundtracks, and as an ultimate Mormon focus here are some hymns put to study rhythm: youtube.com/watch?v=h-H1Xm… (It gets repetitive, but nice once a week or so) It the least it make me chuckle

@hunvreus Yup. So it is a decision individuals have to make. For example I only lean on caffeine when I have to drive cross country or late at night. It messes me up too, though since I limit my intake I'm normal a day later and try to avoid letting it become a crutch or habit.

I've dropped coffee a while back as I realized I was relying on it too much and also experienced caffeine withdrawal when I stopped (headaches, tiredness, etc). Without it I get pretty scatterbrained though; multi-tasking myself into oblivion, getting down rabbit holes (e.g., reading articles about adjacent topics, or looking into how certain things are built). How do ADHD Mormons do it?

@hunvreus Other things that help me: getting a 30-40 minute walk in and weight lifting bleeds off some excess energy. Having a browser system (like tab wrangler) helps me open tabs I want to read later but helps me wait to get to them.

Can someone please explain why I was telling my kids that something costs $6 or $7 and then absolute chaos ensued??

I have a single friend in his late 30s right now. Mega-millionaire. Doing whatever he wants. He's happy! He always asks me "where are you going next" and I always respond "nowhere, I just want to be home with my kid." And he looks at me like I'm CRAZY. He tries to empathize, but can't. I used to be him. There's nothing wrong with being him. I'm happy for him. But kids rebalance your life to realizing that nothing matters more than them. Like nothing even comes close to mattering. Everything else becomes noise. And I didn't get it either. So I don't expect other people without kids to get it either. And that's fine. I'm not judging you. Even when I decided to have kids, I didn't (couldn't!) know what to expect. I wasn't particularly excited, honestly. But holy shit does that change once they come. I look at my life in bewilderment almost every week thinking how my 20s self would've hated this, and yet this is the best my life has ever been. My kid is sleeping right now and I'm just counting down the minutes for her to wake up so we can hang out. That's all I want.

@htmx_org This took a minute. I couldn't use the names, or it triggered copyright. Yet, I vaguely described what I wanted, and it nailed all three.

A GiveSendGo has been set up for the Latter-day Saint shooter’s family. In addition to the death and destruction he caused, He left behind a wife and several children, including one who requires expensive medical attention. Pray for your enemies. Bless those who curse you. Link in the next post.

Living to 101 is a privilege I never anticipated. I was pleased to be able to share a few thoughts in a global publication about what I have learned and observed during this time. After more than a century of life and decades of studying both the human body and the human soul, I have found this to be true: we are happiest when we remember our divine worth and extend that recognition to others—beginning with our own families. More than two millennia ago, Jesus Christ preached these same laws of happiness: to love God and to love our neighbor. After 101 years, I can say that these are not abstract theological ideas—they are practical wisdom. If you would like, you may read in the link below some of the thoughts I penned. time.com/7315003/russel…
