@CoryMSimon @DowlingLab On the other hand, for chemical/pharma/ag companies, during their R&D stage, it is common to send out samples to CROs for detailed analysis. During production stage, CMOs/CDMOs sometimes send samples back to the companies for spec check.

excellent point! [the parks in Michigan look amazing, BTW. will visit one summer.] @DowlingLab, @checlams1 this ski rental problem must arise in chemical engineering. eg. in a chemical plant, should it purchase the expensive instrument to do some non-routine analysis, or farm the samples out to an outside firm?

@CoryMSimon @DowlingLab Most refineries and large chemical plants have their own process analytics team equipped with instruments. But for really tricky analysis, they might outsource it and pay a fee. And I know water treatment plants routinely send out samples to other firms for certain analyses.

My first grad student Zeyuan Song just gave his first-ever presentation at FOCAPO/CPC 2023. We presented a data-driven finite volume discretization approach to solve a complex PDE called the Richards equation for water flow dynamics in soils. Great job, Zeyuan!
