Some more coverage of our Chemistry YouTube research by @StrathChem students. This time in RSC Chemistry World! 🙂

@LindorffLarsen @swgerritz With how slow proteins move through the gel it isn't really too crazy that molecular interactions with the gel have an impact on its rf. You can probably explain the difference by comparing their structure and how many outward-facing groups are available to interact with the gel
English

@swgerritz I certainly don't expect identical behaviour; it's just rare to have an example to show. Plus the analogy with columns is only partial because the idea behind SDS-PAGE is that the SDS should mask (most) of the chemical differences and leave only (mostly) size. But only mostly
English

@LEMacKz Definitely. Physicists also just like to come up with a new particle or theory of gravity every week so there's a lot of content to talk about. To talk about an obscure transformation or the new synthesis of a random molecule is... not so interesting. Even for chemistry lovers.
English

@chemiolis I think there's a really interesting spin-off study to be had about prevelance of scientific conspiracy theories vs effort to get a following in a field. Easy to do with low-effort physics/bio content but hard to do so in practical chemistry, which is empiral by definition.

I love YouTube chemistry channels, so my team have produced a first-of-a-kind study analyzing over 1600 channels producing Chemistry-related content. 🧵👇

@LEMacKz There's really a lot to say about it and the comparison between fields. To do practical chemistry generally requires more knowledge than just talking about a concept in physics/biology, which is also a hurdle.
Thanks, I did see the mention and was pleasantly surprised ;)
English

@chemiolis Yeah I agree that physics and biology are easier to think about in abstract terms. Visual aspects of chemistry are much better suited to the YouTube video format.
P.S. Your channel is excellent! Did you notice you get mentioned in the introduction section of the paper?
English

@LEMacKz Definitely, but easier talking also makes it so that physics and biology are much more prevalent on YouTube, as opposed to chem where you would need capital to buy equipment to even start. Though actual applied biology (think biotech lab) is even more of a hurdle with cost.
English

@LEMacKz I feel like it's largely because unlike physics and biology, chemistry communication mostly hasn't devolved into the pop-sci click-bait we see there. It's easy to talk about concepts, make thought experiments and ponder/fantasize about physics/biology, for chemistry not so much
English

This study has kind of come full circle. In my 2019 study of science podcasts I noticed chemistry was a lot less popular than physics and biology as a topic of podcasts. Turns out all the fun chemistry content is on YouTube instead!

@DJGould94 Or known fraudulent authors still being able to publish 🤡

@ScottBruner12 Tracking number should be in the shipping confirmation email from the store/squarespace. You can use that on the USPS website. The tracking tells me that all of the shipments should have arrived by today.

@chemiolis
I ordered the icillin kit the moment I saw it was available. The ad copy said “ships within a week”
I’m in California, USA
Any idea how long it should take? Any way to track shipment?
English

@blacknox6 I feel like even at that it does a poor job in effectively teaching the underlying chemistry because it's such a mindnumbing technique where you are just 'required to do math' and write down your data. Feels like wasted lab hours (that you pay for).
English

@chemiolis Because it’s probably the easiest and cheapest way of one, showing students how acid/base reactions can be followed with a pH indicator, and second, because it can also be used quantitatively by using a precise pH probe or by doing conductimetry / potentiometry
English

@NelsonMLchemist I feel the technique is too uncommon to be a standard method that is taught in long boring lab hours that could be used more effectively. In a BSc where inorganic doesn't exist! It is of course useful where it is necessary, but 99% of chemists probably don't touch it ever again
English

@chemiolis It's used all the time in inorganic chem and Li battery research.
English

@chemiolis You'll be serving cubane for Christmas this year? Seriously curious how it tastes though 👀
English

@endless_sine I didn't, but there's probably not much I can do about people reuploading on other random websites. On YouTube I can just force delete their content or copyright claim on other big platforms. These random sites likely aren't even worth the effort to claim.
English

It also just copies random youtube channels and reuploads their content??? i don't think @chemiolis went out of their way to remake their channel on some obscure chinese website, without even editing out "youtube" from their channel description

Several people linked me to this video: youtu.be/io_EOQu3MdM
Thing is ~5 years ago I had put a lot of time money and effort into a similar video when the government explicitly told me to stop. I was devastated.
And now someone else has done it. How would you feel?
