President Donald J. Trump@POTUS

“We had a very meaningful meeting in the White House today. Much was learned that could never be understood without conversation under such fire and pressure. It’s amazing what comes out through emotion, and I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.” –President Donald J. Trump

@zhigangsuo @rhpume It’s such a great pleasure and honor to host you in 3M campus. Thank you for the great talk in fracture and fatigue, as well as the insightful discussion, which were really educational and inspiring in 3M!

Today I visited 3M, gave a seminar, and had technical discussions. At lunch I asked, “What makes 3M work?” “Culture,” a longtime 3Mer replied. It is heartwarming to see people take pride in their organization. That culture was articulated a long time ago.

@ShiQingWang4 @QihanLiu1 @zhigangsuo @RuobingB The length scale was derived from the 1/r crack-tip singularity of the strain energy density. The original analysis of this energy singularity was firstly shown in Jim Rice’s HRR paper, so we assume it’s valid at least for metals. His approach was very generic based on J-integral

@zhigangsuo : there must be calculations, numerical simulations of how embedded flaws - cracks, not the through cracks, produce any stress intensification. I can tell if the flaw size is only a fraction of the sample thickness, there is little effect. Any literature you know?

@zhigangsuo @ShiQingWang4 @RuobingB @chenchao04 In metal working, say air bending or bottoming, most high tensile steels crack if radius is less than 1.5xthickness Sometimes it doesn't even radius=thickness Poor carbon control causes occasional cracks flaws.fractocohesive length depends on Chemical properties or anything else?

Greensmith 1960 doi.org/10.1002/app.19… revisited the relation T = Ed of Thomas 1955. 1 For an incision made by a cutter, d is the diameter of the incision tip, and is not a material property. 2 For a continuously growing cut, d is a material property.

People do not consistently name these two quantities: A. Toughness (J/m2), Gc, measured using a sample with a precut crack. B. Work of fracture (J/m3), Wc, measured using a sample with no precut crack. They have different units. Be careful how each paper names them.

My first co-authored paper in Langer/Anderson lab is published in JACS! We design combinatorial chemistry to fabricate biocompatible hydrogel fibers that can tune a broad range of mechanical properties and show large deformation-humidity coupling. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/ja…
