I saw a post elsewhere titled “Why does Karina get so much hate?” (They weren’t just talking about the charity event — they meant overall, across her activities, she often ends up at the center of criticism.) The basic reason is that Karina looks genuinely happy. And historically, society has always scrutinized women who seem openly happy. To put it bluntly, people look at her and think, “She’s got it so easy.” Other famous female idols who are considered “top beauties” don’t usually get criticized in that way. Why? Because in public appearances, they usually don’t show big, joyful, or relaxed smiles. Karina, on the other hand, smiles in a way that feels natural, bright, and sincere — and that kind of expression is very core to who she is. Her face even looks more radiant when she smiles like that. Also, from the moment she debuted, Karina wasn’t what Koreans typically call a “classic beauty.” She has a distinctive and unique kind of look, not the traditional style. When SM Entertainment began promoting her heavily, the people who got the angriest were mostly women. Even though beauty standards evolve, Karina’s face type has never been part of the mainstream Korean beauty trend. (For example, she has a long neck and a small face like Jang Wonyoung, but her facial features are sharper and more “snake-like” — she even debuted with a ponytail, which emphasized that look.) I’ve observed for a long time the women who loudly say things like “I hate Karina.” Their preferences are usually for soft, classic beauties. So when someone with a more unconventional look suddenly rose to the top of the visual hierarchy — being called the most beautiful among female idols — it really rubbed them the wrong way. The relationship between celebrities and the public in Korea is unique: idols know the public’s faces, but the public doesn’t know the idols personally (unless they go to fan sign events). Even within this dynamic, there are unspoken hierarchies, character roles, and power struggles. What Karina is experiencing now is basically people saying, “You’re not on that level,” and trying to tear her down to “put her back in place.” Another pattern is that people often downplay Karina’s efforts and attribute her happiness and success to external factors, saying things like: “She’s just rich,” “She’s only popular because men like her,” “It’s because she has a good body,” —essentially dismissing her talent or hard work. When Karina’s dating news came out, remember how girls outside of her fandom reacted? They said things like, “You’re an idol — you shouldn’t act like that,” and basically dragged her publicly. What they really meant was: “Don’t act like you have it so good.” Karina has always been someone who naturally looks happy, and when something good happens, she expresses it wholeheartedly. Even if she weren’t a celebrity, she probably would’ve faced similar backlash from these kinds of people. They’re just mean. It’s ridiculous to think that how much happiness someone is “allowed” to show should depend on their social standing or perceived rank. It’s like they’re enforcing some old feudal hierarchy — “Know your place.” And to expand on the part about people criticizing her for her body: People usually don’t say anything if a woman with a good figure stays quiet and doesn’t draw attention. But if a woman with a larger chest takes off her jacket, suddenly people find a reason to attack her. It’s that same kind of double standard.
