Although the central figure of the #Tiwanaku's Gateway of the Sun has traditionally been identified with #Viracocha, it is unlikely that it is this Inca deity, since the main god in the #Altiplano area was actually #Tunupa and the main character of the Gateway combines characteristics of at least two deities. Tunupa, also known as Tuapaca or Taguapaca, is one of the oldest and most venerated deities in the central and southern #Andes. Its roots trace back to the pre-Tiwanaku and pre-Puquina periods, times when its cult began to take shape. It reached its peak during the rule of the #Aymara kingdoms, including the Collas, Lupacas, and Carangas, and its influence persisted throughout the Inca period. However, during this latter period, its veneration became somewhat conflated with the deity Viracocha. The main figure of the Gateway of the Sun (which belongs to Epoch 2 of the Middle Horizon, in the late Classic Tiwanaku period) has been interpreted by some researchers as a solar deity similar to Inti, while others—including Menzel (1977) and Demarest (1981)—consider it a personification of meteorological and celestial phenomena, as is the case with Tunupa. The secondary figures are called “companions” or “angels.” Iconographically, this character presents attributes of at least two Andean gods, the so-called Central Deity or Radiant Head and the Staff-God: ◦ The Central Deity is represented only as the head of the figure, from which a variety of natural elements emerge in a solar image, displaying tears. This face is widespread in the Early Intermediate Period, although its more complex forms, which bring it closer to our figure, are found in two specific areas: Siguas (Arequipa), where it shows #Nazca influence, and provincial #Pucará-style versions, especially in textiles such as the famous "Tunic of the Gateway," which is very reminiscent of the arrangement of figures on the Gateway of the Sun. ◦ Around the 8th century, the representation of the Staff-God (an iconographic motif of #Chavín origin, probably associated with their principal deity "Huari" or "Guari") spread across a wide territory, simultaneously within the Tiwanaku and #Wari cultures. It was at this time that the paqarina (sacred site) was established at Lake #Titicaca. Wari was influenced by Nazca, while Tiwanaku inherited aspects of Pucará. Both cultures expanded and converged around 600 AD, suggesting a kind of "council" that would initiate the sudden, simultaneous worship of this image in both societies. These societies had been overlapping territorially, but instead of leading to conflict, this resulted in religious unification and territorial demarcation. In this “council” they would have defined the characteristics of the central figure of the Gateway of the Sun, which has a radiant head suggestive of solar worship and carries staffs as a symbol of power, but also presents other characteristic elements such as the podium, the tears, the rays with figures of felines, birds and circles in the headdress and the cortege of “angels”. 📸 "Tunic of the Gateway."
