The highway stretched open ahead of him, sun low and traffic light, when everything abruptly stopped. A line of people stood across the lanes, ropes strung between them like an improvised wall, signs raised, voices loud with anger and urgency. He slowed, confused, then felt the pressure from cars piling up behind him. No police. No warning. Just a choice made in seconds.
Heart racing, he tightened his grip on the wheel of his Jeep Gladiator and rolled forward, pushing through the rope barrier as protesters scattered, shouting after him. In the mirror, the road cleared again, but the weight of what he’d done stayed heavy in his chest long after the highway opened up.
When personal safety, public protest, and split-second decisions collide, where should the line be drawn between self-preservation and respect for civil action?
