I had the distinct honor of meeting with Latvia's Ambassador to the U.S. Elita Kuzma and Chief of Defence Maj. Gen. Kaspars Pudāns at the Latvian Embassy this week in Washington. We reaffirmed the vital importance of our longstanding and highly successful relationship with Michigan and Latvia through the Department of War National Guard Bureau State Partnership Program. This partnership has enhanced the readiness and interoperability of our armed forces while strengthening Baltic security, since 1993, making us Stronger Together and Stronger Tomorrow. 🇺🇸🤝🇱🇻

On National Medal of Honor Day, we pause to honor the extraordinary courage and warrior spirit of the recipients of our nation's highest military valor award. The Medal of Honor was first authorized in 1861, and since that time, only a small number of service members have received this recognition. More than 125 members of the National Guard received this peak distinction. Let us, on this day, and every day, recommit ourselves to the high standard set by these extraordinary individuals and honor their memory through our National Guard service.

It was my honor to join Maj. Gen. Ross and @NGB_SEA Raines today to see our Tennessee National Guard Soldiers and Airmen in action, and recognize their support to law enforcement partners in downtown Memphis. The Memphis Safe Task Force has contributed to a significant reduction in crime—down 43% citywide since last year—through dedicated patrols, rapid responses, and close coordination with interagency and local partners. Hearing stories of saving lives, supporting LE as they remove dangerous criminals from the streets, and hearing business owners shout out, “Thank you,” as we walked by is a clear testament to the professionalism and dedication of our Guardsmen and all involved. #AlwaysReadyAlwaysThere

.@POTUS "The Secretary of War has just signed a directive to ensure THAT ALL National Guard members serving on this task force—as well as in D.C., New Orleans, and our border security missions—will receive the same benefits as active-duty troops, because you DESERVE IT!"

This week, I had the distinct honor of welcoming our fallen heroes home at Dover Air Force Base. Earlier in the week, I was privileged to address the incredible members and supporters of the @TAPSorg family. Thank you, Bonnie, and every member of your organization for ensuring no Gold Star Family walks alone. It was my privilege to present the 2026 Senator Ted Stevens Leadership Award to Sara Wilson, a Navy widow who transformed profound loss into a lifetime of selfless service. Sara has been the quiet, unbreakable anchor for countless survivors, including the family of West Virginia Guardsman Andy Wolfe, in their darkest hours. Survivors lifting survivors, that is the soul of TAPS. God bless our fallen, their families, and this great Nation.

Shannon and I join our entire National Guard family in mourning the loss of six brave KC-135 Airmen, including three Ohio Air National Guardsmen assigned to the 121st Air Refueling Wing and three active-duty Airmen from the 99th Air Refueling Squadron, a partner unit with the Alabama National Guard’s 117th Air Refueling Wing.  Heroes, all. Our air refueling warriors enable every aerial combat mission to succeed by skillfully transferring tens of thousands of pounds of fuel at cruising altitudes and high speeds, extending global reach and delivering decisive air dominance for our Joint Force. Combat aviators in every service understand the critical role of our air refueling crews and boom operators. Immense respect for these valiant Airmen. Our thoughts, prayers and heartfelt condolences to their Families, Wingmen and the entire tanker community.

Proud to highlight a member of our National Guard family: Retired Michigan Army National Guard Command Sgt. Maj. Terry Richardson, who received the Medal of Honor from @POTUS on Monday. Nearly 60 years after his heroic actions on Sept. 14, 1968, in Vietnam—wounded yet directing 30+ airstrikes to save 85 Soldiers—his valor is now recognized by our Nation's highest military award. CSM Richardson brought his warrior ethos to the Guard. After active duty, he joined the Michigan Guard in 1978, served for 30 years & retired in 2008 as post CSM at Camp Grayling. The Guard thrives on citizen-warriors who answer the call. Thank you, CSM Richardson, for exemplifying selfless service. #AlwaysReadyAlwaysThere

Last weekend, @NGB_SEA Raines & I visited Guardsmen & Joint Force troops supporting Joint Task Force Southern Guard at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay. In a true joint environment, our Guardsmen deliver vital security, engineering & force protection—keeping the installation secure, operational & ready. This is an important mission that directly supports our Nation’s security & strategic objectives. Proud of our Guard for being #AlwaysReadyAlwaysThere!
