This is a 'step ladder pattern' which is typically seen in apoptosis. It's also called DNA laddering, characterized by the activation of endogenous endonucleases with subsequent cleavage of chromatin DNA into internucleosomal fragments of roughly 180-200 base pairs(bp). A smear pattern is seen in necrosis.
