A popular story holds that HMS Rodney was pushing 25 knots during the famous pursuit of Bismarck. Was it possible for Rodney to even push herself to such speeds? Matthew J Wright (@MJWrightNZ) looks into the story and pulls up the records to determine just how fast Rodney was going as she chased down the Bismarck. navygeneralboard.com/hms-rodneys-ac…

Jack Bowsher - Thunder Run: Meiktila 1945
Today’s #MapMonday is the one I had blown up so I could hang it on the wall in front of me when writing Thunder Run. All the war diaries had the names of tiny villages the armour, motorised infantry and self-propelled artillery swept through, and this helped plot them all.

@chiselbury @DurhamWASP No I don't think that's fair to say, it's just your opinion, which I respect. For someone in publishing though, one would hope spelling names correctly would be more of a priority.

@ArundelXVI @DurhamWASP I think it is fair to say though that Brideshead Revisited is so much better than anything Amos wrote.

@DurhamWASP Such a superb series. I appreciated it more than the novel, which Martin Amis called, "My favourite bad book."

I was pleased to provide a 'dit' for @HMWarships this morning reference a photo they posted of HMS Warspite at Puget Sound Navy Yard in 1941/42 receiving repairs after a bomb hit off Crete. It was a pic also used in my 2001 book on the legendary Royal Navy battleship. To make sure I was recalling things correctly I adjourned to my main library - there's more than one! - to retrieve said book and check some details (see image below, sixth book from the right). That section (which contains not all of my works) represents more than a quarter of a century interviewing veterans - including attending warship reunions and other gatherings or visiting them at home - plus ventures to various related locales, museum archive research and reading up, and more. Since the late 1990s there's been a great deal of toil over a hot keyboard between editions of @WarshipsIFR magazine and working for other people. On the far left of the image below is the hardback 'uncorrected bound copy' (only two in existence) of my first novel and next book, 'Martin's Eyes'. Next to it is the succeeding tweaked paperback copy, used for final corrections and which was sent out for early review. The process of creating 'Martin's Eyes' has stretched across the whole course of producing the majority of my factual output. Inevitably some of the latter informs the fictional world I have created. But, 'Martin's Eyes' is on the verge of being published at last, by @chiselbury It will be unleashed officially on 10 April. It is currently being printed. Phew! ¼ Who downgraded Paddy Mayne’s VC recommendation to a DSO? Duncan Ridler might have the answer He was the sergeant in the 1SAS Intelligence Section I’m currently re-listening to the 4 hour interview I conducted with Duncan (front 2) in 2003. He was recommended for a DCM in 1943.

The Forgotten War Podcast: Burma Campaign WW2
The 1942 retreat was a tragedy known amongst the Naga as the "Skeleton Road". Amidst the horror of the refugee crisis, the young Assam Regiment stood as the vanguard. This episode honours those who suffered and those who fought to guard the gate into India #Tragedy #BurmaWar #Memories

@Balkan_Dave How long before it is revived again? For the last 40 years the Stonehenge by-pass has been a regular favourite to be proposed, approved and cancelled. Presumably some people have made it tshepo full time profession for their entire lives.

Jack Bowsher - Thunder Run: Meiktila 1945
Today's #MapMonday is the one my wife drew and I annotated to illustrate the capture of the tennis court at Kohima on 13 May 1944. The map and a detailed description of the event are in my first book Forgotten Armour: Tank Warfare in Burma. It really gives context to a number of the scenes in the IWM film footage taken later that same day - this piece of film is amazing as you watch Capt Clive Chettle of the 2 Dorsets clear the area - Chettle is the guy with the revolver with the lanyard hanging loose, cigarette in mouth throughout. iwm.org.uk/collections/it…

In 1942, the Assam Regiment marched 134 miles to Imphal after their vehicles were confiscated. Moving by night through monsoon rains, they proved their endurance early on. This journey forged the spirit seen later at Jessami #Endurance #WW2 #March
