I just hope that someday, we get to live in a country that is kinder to its people, where basic needs are not treated as privileges, where hard work is rewarded, and where no one has to suffer just to survive. The Filipino people deserve so much more than this.

Someone has to be made accountable for Bato’s escape. No less than the DILG Secretary and PNP Chief entered the senate building last night to secure the senators. The public was assured last night Bato was in the “5th foor, in his room, resting”. Bato’s lawyer showed a video last night of Bato supposedly in the senate. The senate building should’ve been secured last night - no one in, no one out. We need answers. How did Bato escape? Who helped him?

I was eating lunch at a cheap teishoku place in Tokyo. The kind where working people go for fast, filling meals. The salaryman sat down at the counter next to me. Ordered the daily special. When it came, he just stared at it for a minute before eating. Not in a bad way. Just... looking at it. Really looking at it. He noticed me and looked embarrassed. Said in English "sorry. I have a strange habit." I said no problem, and asked what the habit was. He said "before eating, I look at food and think about all the people who made this meal possible." He pointed at the rice. "Farmer who grew rice. Person who transported rice. Person who cooked rice." Then the fish. "Fisherman. Market worker. Chef." He said "my father taught me this. He said every meal is the work of hundreds of people. We should acknowledge this before eating." He did a little bow to his food and started eating. I tried it with my meal. Looked at everything on my plate and thought about all the people involved. The farmers, the drivers, the cooks, the person who washed the dishes it was served on. It made the cheap ¥600 lunch feel like something sacred. When we both finished, the salaryman said "you tried it? Looking?" I said yes. He smiled. "Makes food taste better, yes? When you remember you are not alone, that many people worked so you can eat, food becomes... how do you say... gratitude in physical form." I've been doing it ever since. Before every meal, I look and think about all the hands that touched it.

I was staying at a hostel in Kobe. I couldn't sleep so I went to the common area around 3am. The night custodian was there mopping the floor. Old guy, probably late 60s. He saw me and said "sorry, floor is wet. You can walk on this side." I said thank you and sat down with my book. He kept mopping, very methodical, very thorough. After a while he took a break and sat down near me. Asked what I was reading. We started talking. He told me he'd been doing night custodian work for 15 years. Before that he was a teacher. I asked why he switched. He said "I retired from teaching. But I am not ready to retire from working. I need purpose." He said his friends think it's sad that a former teacher is now mopping floors. "But I don't think so. Teaching is helping young people become clean, good people. Mopping is making spaces clean and good for people. It is the same thing, just a different method." He said the best part of night custodian work is that he sees a place at its quietest. "During the day, the hostel is loud, busy, and messy. But at night, it is peaceful. I clean when no one is watching. No one says thank you because no one sees me work. But in the morning, people wake up to clean floors, clean bathrooms, clean kitchens. They don't know why it's clean. They just know it is. That is the perfect job. To help people without them knowing you helped." I asked if he ever felt unappreciated. He said "no. Appreciation is for ego. I don't need ego. I need purpose. Cleaning the floors is my purpose."
