@Ahpotts @MmeLockhartLDSB @DrToste Thanks for sharing! Will be reading this soon! For my junior students, I have started with the six syllable rules before teaching affixes. It has had a HUGE impact. When we get to an unfamiliar word, we can break it down to its syllables and it becomes decodable.

@sproudfoot Absolutely agree but the problem is the segregation that happens between English vs EFI. A school may be walking distance but it's EFI only. So English program kids are bused. If we truly want less kids depending on buses, eliminate EFI. Then you would have community schools.

@Ahpotts Report cards = 😡 My resources may be too "primary" but happy to help if possible. A group of us are really digging deep into the Science of Reading and Scarborough's Reading Rope the past few years.

@Ahpotts @literacypodcast @ELCOntario My knowledge is elementary-aged and I would need to know more about their phonics levels, but UFLI is a great resource for the basics of phonics/decoding. Dibels and MAZE are good screeners (fluency, comp). @SoundSyllable for vocab, morphology. Email me if you want to chat!

Everything @RutaSepetys writes is gold. I have loved all her books, and they are essential for any highschool classroom (@TheSPearson - you need these!!!) The best YA historical fiction.

Before you introduce this to your class, read The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors by @DrewDaywalt It's a ridiculously fun book for ALL ages. And for outside, I have the kids line up at opposite goal posts on the field, then they run towards each other. So. Much. Fun.

@TheSPearson Also: Salt to the Sea, Between Shades of Grey, The Fountains of Silence. All 20th century YA historical fiction. So. Good.

Just bought the audio book for my son who loves the series. I appreciate the accessibility for those who need an alternative to print.
