Ethical Transsexualism Dilemma: Can a transsexual teach/participate in a women’s self defense class? In general, I’d say yes. The class sign up material should be clear. (I understand the argument that then it isn’t purely a woman’s class). This is entirely up to the organization presenting it. The open classroom is not a single sex space, so there is no violation there. The organization should ensure private restroom/changing facilities for both sexes. There is also the fact that many self defense classes targeted at women are taught by men (or have men assisting). So a man would be present anyways. This should be seen as a noble effort by males to help women protect themselves, even if that male is a transsexual. While we can have a semantic discussion about what it should be called, there really is no reason to deny anyone the chance to participate. And there is no reason to exclude transsexuals as instructors, provided they are qualified. All that being said, if an organization wants to have a women’s only class that is taught by women and only includes women, that is their right and must be respected. Transsexuals will have to find a different class/session that accommodates them. ❤️, Emily
