Having watched BBC Panaroma this evening I am moved to say this. I feel desperately sad for everyone affected by this appalling case - all the families and, yes, also the man who killed the 3 people in Nottingham. All were clearly let down by the system with tragic consequences.

We do need government to recognise the true value of a more active society, but also the true value of SPORT and the need for new thinking on how to achieve sustained increases in sport participation. The link below is relevant in that context. tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…

Our Director of Communications, Cameron Yorston, was on @SkyNews this morning to speak about the potential impact of @TeamGB's success at the Olympics on grassroots participation, and how we can work with Government and the sports sector to make the UK a more active nation 🥇🥈🥉

This is so sad. As someone who’s suffered in the past with depression, including occasional suicidal thoughts, I can identify with what his family are going through - so brave of them to speak out Former England batter Thorpe took his own life, family says bbc.com/sport/cricket/…

This makes me sad and angry - income and wealth inequality are the root cause of many problems in our society - perhaps it’s time for government to act… Big firm bosses' pay rose 16% as workers squeezed bbc.co.uk/news/business-…

Loved the Olympics closing ceremony this evening - a wonderful advert for France and for the Olympic movement. When sport, arts and creativity combine in that way it reminds us all of the best of humanity. Can’t say I’m excited about another Olympics in LA though.

Interested in US politics? - you may want to check out this new book. I just listened to an interview with the author on BBC Americast. All in the Family by Fred Trump review – when dollars are thicker than blood | Autobiography and memoir | The Guardian theguardian.com/books/article/…

As the Olympics ends today, some reflections. Don’t believe the Olympics delivers sustained increases in participation - they don’t. However, the inspiration factor is very real and powerful, not just for young athletes but others too. Olympic athletes can be great role models.

Good times today on my volunteer shift at the S6 foodbank - meeting and helping individuals and families struggling with the cost of living and other things. A truly humbling and life affirming experience - the volunteers are great too - such interesting and inspiring people.

Last night people power triumphed over hate and bigotry from a small but significant minority. Well done to everyone who joined the crowds, but the root causes of the riots still need addressing.

Fun times on the golf course this afternoon with my newish neighbour David. My golf was rubbish, albeit on a challenging course - so bad that I now need some new golf balls as I managed to lose most of them - but the company was great. 🏌️🏌️

I am encouraged by Kamala Harris’ choice of running mate, Tim Walz. Calling Donald Trump ‘weird’ was a piece of genius; I understand he has also called Trump out for never laughing, not once, during his time in the White House, except at other people. That’s both sad and weird..

The riots in recent days have uncovered a deep sense of division, hatred and alienation in our society. We need to foster new models of citizenship if these problems are to be resolved. I am doing some work in this space which I am happy to share if anyone is interested.
