If you're surprised that a journalist who speaks no local language was paid to "help" resistance movements, you are right to be. Moreover, David Patrikarakos wrote two stories about the movement as a journalist, without disclosing his connection to it.

Ukrainians who participate in resistance in occupied territories are some of the bravest people that walk the earth. They deserve better than to be turned into a token that guarantees the flow of Western funding to people in Kyiv, Dubai, and London.

Kyiv Independent випустили детальне розслідування про рух «Жовта стрічка», (kyivindependent.com/investigation-…) і багато чого для мене стало на свої місця Я неодноразово раніше публікував критику на адресу подібних проєктів спротиву в окупації, ставлячи запитання: «чому вони не змінюють тактику?» і «навіщо такий регулярний потік однотипних фотографій зі стрічками й листівками під камерами російських спецслужб?», глибоко в душі розуміючи, що ця історія очевидно є грантовою. Але до останнього сподівався, що організатори цих проєктів прислухаються до критики оточуючих (особливо людей, які самі жили й діяли в інтересах України в умовах російської окупації) та змінять свою тактику. Але цього не сталося з незрозумілих для мене досі причин У розслідуванні фігурує сума в 1 700 955 доларів, виділених західними партнерами на ці проєкти в період з 2022 по 2024 рік — що випливає з даних у відкритих джерелах. Це ціна ось цих сотень красивих фотографій із листівками на тлі окупованих міст, які в нас так люблять репостити й розміщувати в ЗМІ, не замислюючись про наслідки для людей в окупації, що роблять ці фото на регулярній основі вже 4 (!) роки поспіль. Практично одні й ті самі місця, одні й ті самі листівки та стрічки Цікаво, а це папір для листівок із написами в окупації такий дорогий чи, може, жовта тканина для стрічок, що це обходиться майже в 2 мільйони доларів за кілька років таких акцій? Але проблема в іншому: українці в окупації не можуть коштувати жодних грошей. Їхня безпека має бути понад усе, адже нові українці в окупації, на жаль, не народжуються. Ми маємо зробити все можливе, щоб вони залишалися на свободі й живими, знаючи, що ми про них пам’ятаємо й цінуємо. Зараз вже не 2014-й, не 2022-й і навіть не 2024-й рік, коли українцям в окупації ще доводилося доводити свою вірність країні вчинками, ризикуючи свободою. А ті найсміливіші з них, ідучи на ризики, мають розуміти, що роблять це на благо рідної України, а не за мільйони доларів, які незрозуміло кому йдуть і незрозуміло на що витрачаються. Тим більше що методи діяльності, які працювали в окупації ще кілька років тому, зараз просто втратили будь-який сенс через зміну тактики роботи репресивної машини у вигляді російських спецслужб на цих територіях Я особисто 8 років свого життя вів проукраїнський Twitter з окупації, передаючи будь-яку корисну інформацію на підконтрольну територію й висвітлюючи все, що відбувається, з точки зору українця, який залишився на окупованій території. Не отримуючи за це нічого, як і сотні інших подібних мені українців, ідучи на очевидне самопожертвування, ризикуючи особистою безпекою заради рідної України. Але якби я тоді дізнався, що хтось просто використовує мене заради фінансування своїх проєктів… Українці в окупації й так почуваються сам на сам із ворогом, покинутими й забутими всіма богами, і далеко не кожен залишається морально на плаву після всього пережитого. А коли стає відомо, що за твої подвиги (а сфотографувати стрічку в окупації — це вже подвиг) хтось просто вибиває велике фінансування, забуваючи про твою безпеку… Соромно. До цих проєктів публічно звертався не лише я, але ніхто з них так і не зміг публічно відповісти на запитання: «чому на 2026 рік вони не змінюють тактику для своїх, прости Господи, активістів?» Нагадаю, що я вже писав і продовжу: в умовах російської окупації не може бути жодних активістів — це справжні партизани. Так само там не може бути жодних ненасильницьких протестів — це територія абсолютної жорстокості й смерті з боку російських репресивних органів Словосполучення «ненасильницький протест» підходить лише для написання грантових проєктів для наших шановних західних партнерів, які не мають жодного уявлення про те, що таке російська окупація і що там відбувається
