Mercy is not permission to stay the same; it is power to rise again. Every time God forgives you, He is also calling you higher. Every time He restores you, He is telling you your purpose is still alive. If you have fallen, rise. If you are tired, return. If you are confused, seek Him. If you feel unworthy, remember: mercy is for the unworthy. Let the mercy of God humble you, strengthen you, and redirect you. And most importantly, become a leaflet of mercy to someone else. Forgive. A church in Atlanta was honoring one of its senior pastors who had been retired many years. He was 92 at that time and I wondered why the church even bothered to ask the old gentleman to preach at that age. After a warm welcome, introduction of this speaker, and as the applause quieted down, he rose from his high back chair and walked slowly, with great effort and a sliding gait to the podium. Without a note or written paper of any kind he placed both hands on the pulpit to steady himself and then quietly and slowly he began to speak.... "When I was asked to come here today and talk to you, your pastor asked me to tell you what was the greatest lesson ever learned in my 50-odd years of preaching. I thought about it for a few days and boiled it down to just one thing that made the most difference in my life and sustained me through all my trials. The one thing that I could always rely on when tears and heartbreak and pain and fear and sorrow paralyzed me... The only thing that would comfort was this verse.... "Jesus loves me this I know. For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong, We are weak but He is strong..... Yes, Jesus loves me.... The Bible tells me so." The old pastor stated, "I always noticed that it was the adults who chose the children's hymn 'Jesus Loves Me' (for the children of course) during a hymn sing, and it was the adults who sang the loudest because I could see they knew it the best." "Here for you now is a Senior version of Jesus Loves Me": JESUS LOVES ME Jesus loves me, this I know, Though my hair is white as snow Though my sight is growing dim, Still He bids me trust in Him. The Bible shaped America’s core values from the very beginning: • “All men are created equal” and endowed with rights by their Creator (Declaration of Independence) came straight from the biblical truth that every human is made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27). • Our legal system drew heavily from the Ten Commandments — “Thou shalt not murder,” “Thou shalt not steal,” “Thou shalt not bear false witness.” These became the moral bedrock of law and order. • Charity and loving your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:31) inspired hospitals, orphanages, universities (Harvard, Yale, Princeton all started as Christian institutions), and a culture of voluntary generosity unmatched anywhere else. • The nuclear family — faithfulness to your spouse, raising children in the fear of the Lord — was seen as the foundation of a stable society. • Work ethic, honesty, personal responsibility, and the idea of covenant with God fueled the Protestant work ethic that turned a wilderness into the greatest nation in history. The Founders quoted the Bible more than any other source. They believed a free republic could only survive with a moral, self-governing people rooted in Christian truth. What’s wrong with wanting a government built on: • The love and teachings of Jesus Christ • Law and order • Charity and loving your neighbor • Faithfulness to your spouse • Honoring life (no murder) and property (no stealing) That’s not extremism. That’s the moral foundation that made America exceptional. We don’t need to apologize for wanting a nation that reflects the values of its founders and the Bible that guided them. That verse was a warning for Israel to stay faithful to God’s covenant. They didn’t and they were destroyed in 70AD. To have the President read that exact verse is either a great thing if this country is going to be faithful to Christ, or a terrifying thing if we continue in our apostasy against Christ.
