I wrote about this cheap and no-process tool called "Peer Groups" that helped me so much during the last few years. I learned so much from these great people around me, and otherwise I would have missed out on that. Big 🧡 for all my wonderful peers! uhl-steine-scherben.org/blog/posts/pee…

Good people management has been very top of mind for me lately. 🤔 Honeycomb is big enough now that we are starting to develop our own "manager training" materials (except not just for managers, and more like an...immersive experiment?)

@mipsytipsy It was by no means complete or polished, but was raw, truthful, honest and very close to the reality of EM-ing at Personio. So much better that these soulless cookiecutter courses.

@mipsytipsy We had somewhat good success setting up an Acting Engineering Management Program, where we (EMs) created 4 Tracks with about ~10 Topics each that we deemed important to get into everyones brain. The AEM then picked one mentor for each track, and then they dove in weekly.

Of course a new leader coming in and filling key positions with their buddies is annoying, but I start to realise that a new (senior) leader who‘s unable to pull people from their previous place is a way bigger problem in the long run

I wrote about running interviews well - Interviewing is a learned skill. Making them a fun experience is a great way to hire great talent and also a solid contribution to employer branding. uhl-steine-scherben.org/blog/posts/bei…

I wrote a bit about how to hire Engineering Managers and managed to wrangle a whole bunch of questionable opinions into this one - after hiring a few Managers myself I dreamed up my ideal process for the next wave of hypergrowth or just further hiring :) uhl-steine-scherben.org/blog/posts/hir…

Energetic, amped up, friendly, and joyful. That's how we want everyone to behave at all times. But that’s hard, and it seems like a lot of people wash out after 1 or 2 years after joining the company. I collected approaches for managing my energy better: uhl-steine-scherben.org/blog/posts/man…

@chrisuhl TOTALLY. Hey, the rest of your blog is pretty great too! High five from another formerly-poor kid who can't believe their luck after landing in tech.

I wrote a slightly longer-form piece about the risks of having an "architect" role distinct from engineering, and a few models for avoiding/compensating for that risk. Thanks to all the wonderful architects who replied. (I 💜 you, I really do!!) charity.wtf/2023/03/09/arc…

@mipsytipsy Which I find super odd, why would you have a role just to counteract a particular organizational dysfunction? You should probably fix why people are doing that instead of having "preventers of nonsense" as a role, that just introduces unhealthy gatekeeping

@mipsytipsy I really like the article and the thoughts behind them! When I wrote a post in the same direction (uhl-steine-scherben.org/blog/posts/arc…) I got some very interesting pushback: When there are no more architects, who prevents the teams from going havoc and creating a mess of a technology zoo?

Regular 1-on-1s are to this day my favorite management tool. It’s probably the one constant factor in a sea of learning over the last few years, but I believe I also got a little bit better at running them. I collected something close to a Field Guide: uhl-steine-scherben.org/blog/posts/get…

@wagnerdennis Yes, that‘s important to me - sociotechnical could be a fitting term, but that brings a lot of theory with it

A while ago I told one of my new Engineering Managers that I expect them to develop a strategy for their team. And oh my, were they confused by this ambiguous ask. I failed to explain this multiple times so here's my learnings: uhl-steine-scherben.org/blog/posts/hav…
