Let's say they use facial recognition for age detection/verification. It'll work something like this: You open an app and it'll scan your face and it'll decide how old you are. If it doesn't hold a record (like your personal phone etc) it'll have to do a fresh check every time. It'll get frustrating when you spend longer opening and accessing an app than you plan to look at the app. The verification offers to save your record to make it quicker in future and then you have to set up an account to link with your face. Done. That's your digital ID. The record is there of pretty much everything about you and the gaps are filled in by the social media. Of course the government will have regulations about who can access that information which will likely deny private companies data farming but there won't be any such protections about how the government collates that data. And even if there are then that can be changed by future governments. Every little bit of information about you will be held centrally and made available across all government institutions. "That's what happens now!" No, actually it isn't. Different government departments aren't allowed to dip into each other's systems. There are lots of records but they aren't centralised and that is how you and your privacy are protected.
