Time now for a probably too sincere/heartfelt, and definitely way too long (and possibly a little cringeworthy) post about friendship, growing up, unspeakable loss & career ambitions. 2005: I’m a Junior at @SyracuseU & working at @WAERSports & meet a new student, @DannyParkins. He & I instantly become friends, most likely about a shared singular focus: Both wanting to one day be the single best sports radio host in the country. Danny wanted to do it from Chicago, eventually taking over afternoons on @670TheScore, his dream job. I wanted to do it nationally, eventually taking over for @colincowherd (more on him later). Danny & I spent the next 2 years working together, learning from each other & gambling on literally anything along with @ThePoniExpress & @MikeMeltser. Over the next 5 years, we would graduate, and, amazingly, all get jobs talking on the radio in disparate cities. I ended up in my hometown of KC & Danny ended up on the air in Syracuse. 2010: There’s a show open in KC & Danny applies for it & gets it! My best friend is moving to my hometown. It’s amazing. 2012: I move to Houston (with the help of @MikeMeltser!) to do radio there. Danny stays in KC & helps take care of my wife & kids until they move to Houston with me. 2016: While attempting to get a radio job, I somehow end up with a TV job & I’m told the job will be working with Colin Cowherd. I can’t believe what’s happening, but I’m moving to LA. 2017: Danny does it! He lands his dream job in Chicago. He & his wife are moving to his hometown so he can fulfill his lifelong dream. Shortly after that, I find out that @FS1 wants me to go to NYC to start a new morning show, @FTFonFS1. 2020: In one the greatest turn of events ever, not only have I become dear friends with Colin, but he now also wants to hire Danny to do a podcast on his new network. Truly a surreal sequence of events in just 15 years. (This podcast didn’t end up happening because of silly corporate radio conflicts, but the silver lining was it did lead to Danny doing my favorite podcast alongside our lifelong friend @ThePoniExpress) 2020-2023: Basically every personal tragedy that can be visited upon someone is visited upon Danny. His father, who was an amazing man, gets a debilitating illness & slowly dies. His brother, his actual best friend even though I claim to be, gets terminal brain cancer & after a valiant, heroic fight, passes away. He nearly, but miraculously doesn’t, lose his first born son. 2024: Danny happens to be in NYC on a day FTF needs a guest, and he fills in… which he crushes because he’s a superstar talent which leads to more guest appearances which leads to him filling in for Colin which leads to him now doing exactly what I did 7 years ago: Picking up his family & moving to New York, for a job he wasn’t even gunning for, to host mornings on @FS1. It’s been just under 20 years since Danny & I first worked together, and more than 12 years since we last worked together. And now we get to work together again. I’m so damn proud of him & so damn happy for myself & for @FS1. This is going to be great.
