My critique on Predator: 1) The initial premise of tricking the military guys into thinking it was a rescue mission, only to kill the guerrilla village was totally devoid from anything to do with the Predator plot. It was an incongruous as From Dusk Til Dawn or Sinners, when it was a great crime movie that suddenly turned into a stupid zombie flick. 2) There was no explanation for the Predator. Not where it came from, how it got there, what its purpose was. 3) It was ridiculous that an alien reptilian creature would carry knives as murder weapons. 4) Even from a cinematic / suspense perspective, it made no sense even within the movie why the Predator would explode some people, slice others, and then go hand-to-hand with Arnold as the climax to the movie. 5) Beyond preposterous that the Predator could see the heat of a ferret in the woods, yet a thin coat of mud totally blocked Arnold (even though his eyes were still visible). 6) That Arnold didn't smash its head with the stone just made no sense. As though the Predator wasn't still threat while pinned that should be immediately neutralized. Arnie backs off with the stone. 7) The entire movies after the awesome beginning was a stupid chase through the forest that defied belief even when suspended. 8) The Predator had a grotesque reptilian face, yet was humanoid in all other respects (down to the dreadlocks). Even by the standards of fantasy action, the movie sucked. I hope you have enjoyed this installment of Viva Reviews. Next up: Odyssey. :)

I literally just watched Predator for the first time (I strongly disliked it), but this was effectively the Predator's camouflage mechanism to the humans in the movie.

It’s honestly beautiful watching film Twitter come together to clown on the Critical Drinker and the rest of the rage-bait grifter ecosystem after THE ODYSSEY. These people claim to love movies, but all they do is attack them. Every casting choice is woke. Every studio decision is proof Hollywood is dying. Every movie is declared a failure months before release because outrage is easier, cheaper and more profitable than actually engaging with the art. The Critical Drinker is the top of the funnel. He packages the resentment in a cleaner, more respectable way, then the algorithm leads people toward creators who are far more openly racist, sexist and bigoted. The entire business depends on keeping the audience “ignorant, ill-educated, and illiterate” about the movies and the industry they’re supposedly defending. They tried desperately to turn Christopher Nolan into another woke Hollywood disaster. They misunderstood the Academy rules, obsessed over tiny casting choices and predicted audiences would reject the film. Instead, THE ODYSSEY became a massive success, and every talking point blew up in their faces. That doesn’t mean the grift is dead. Their audience wants confirmation bias and will happily follow them into the next manufactured controversy. But defeating this stuff requires vigilance. Mock them. Correct them. Show everyone that they hold no real power beyond the attention people hand them. THE ODYSSEY may be the first step on the journey toward showing just how foolish these fools truly are. Nature might finally be healing.

There have been a handful of times where I actively hated a movie as I was watching it in a theater, but as a percentage, it’s gotta be tiny. I remember feeling like the critically-acclaimed RUSSIAN ARK (2002) was pure torture. I was even tempted to walk out, but I have a sunk-cost mindset where if I bought a ticket, I should at least sit it out. I remember also not enjoying Richard Linklater’s WAKING LIFE (2001) at all. That I can remember these, and that they’re weird movies that barely got released, anyway, is probably an exception that proves the rule sort of thing.

I love movies and, if you’ve followed me long enough, you know that I’ll watch and enjoy anything. In college, I had a roommate who was a film major, and we’d go see whatever came out pretty much every weekend, didn’t matter what it was or if we cared enough to see. Going to the movies is fun. You can always learn something, even if what you learned is that you don’t like something. Worst case scenario if we didn’t like what we saw, we’d make fun of it together afterwards. I have another friend who’s a big film buff, but he’s the type of guy (that we now experience here on a regular basis) who hates almost every movie he sees. Loves moves in theory but just despises almost everything in practice. This was like 25 years ago, he’d see a movie, inevitably hate it, then see that a film critic in a New York newspaper gave it a positive review, and call the critic on the phone and yell at him. Wild behavior. Years ago, after seeing a movie together, that second friend told me he was envious of me because I could watch just about anything and find something about it to enjoy. He regretted that he could not do that. I could tell he was being sincere. I assume that this is either an innate quality or one built up subconsciously over years but, either way, not something you can flip a switch and choose. That said, as the guy who finds something to enjoy, I recommend that everyone try to find something to enjoy. You’ll be a lot happier during and after each movie.
