This week was the most inspiring and life-changing week of my life—beginning with the honor of meeting Vice President Kamala Harris of the United States of America @KamalaHarris and hearing her call us to recognize our responsibility when we are in positions of power, and to know when to step forward or make space for others.
That message showed up again through our village. Deep gratitude to the Community Health Workers who showed up online for the Rehabilitation and Social Services Committee meeting—while still serving communities every day. Thank you to our allies, partners, and supporters who took action by attending meetings, emailing elected officials, sharing alerts, and mobilizing others. Those actions matter more than you know.
This moment brought me back to 2015, during the push for Community Health Worker Certification, when only a handful of us were pulling overnighters and pushing behind the scenes to make certification real. That work mattered. Today, Virginia has over 600 certified CHWs and more than 2,300 CHWs serving communities across this beautiful Commonwealth. Progress is built on persistence.
As we used to say then: “Two ants do not fail to pull one grasshopper.” If you’ve been missing in action, there is still time. We need each other.
SB275 is still alive, thanks in large part to our patron and champion, Senator Williams Graves @AWGNorfolk . We remain committed to getting into the Good Trouble we were called to make. Let’s continue advocating from our spaces of influence to move this bill forward—toward the desk of Governor Spanberger. Even partial progress matters.
We share a common goal: fully integrating CHWs into care coordination, recognizing them as essential members of multidisciplinary teams, and strengthening trust between communities and systems.
