@ElaineARoche My uncle is called Gerard because when my grandmother found out she was expecting him in 1964, she’d already been told not to have any more children. She did a novena to St Gerard. Now my uncle Gerard is now a strapping lad of 62. I will be thinking of your friend 🙏

Some of the very best days and nights of my life were in the company of Michael Lyster. A man devoid of ego. A celebrity who declined to take himself seriously. A brilliant professional. Generous, mischievous, and in love with the idea of being alive. The Sunday Game made flesh.

@urlofcork I live in London now but my heart will always be in Kerry, even though I grew up in County Cork! Kerry is where my grandparents are from and the place that always feels most like home to me. Even as a small child I had such a strong pull to the place when we would visit.

Roots...what ties us to a place birth, family ,experience, memories? My family have been up & down to West Cork for 100 years, I sit 5 good pucks of a sliothar from where my Grandfather and my Dad spent a lot of their lives. I feel as at one here with them, as with the sea& sky

One of my all time favourites, that beautiful soaring chorus, Bowie looking ultra handsome, what’s not to love!
David Bowie Official@DavidBowieReal

ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS SINGLE IS FORTY “If our love song, Could fly over mountains...” The Langer / Winstanley produced Absolute Beginners single was released forty years ago today on 3rd March 1986. Reaching #2 in the UK chart and the top ten of many other countries, the record was released ahead of the film and the various artists soundtrack album. We’ll talk more about the film and soundtrack at a later date. Julien Temple shot the music video, which echoed the 1950s style of the Absolute Beginners film. The video was a homage to an old British advert for Strand cigarettes. The ill-fated advertising tagline "You're never alone with a Strand" is quoted by Vendice Partners in the film. The video also uses footage from the film. Watch it here: youtube.com/watch?v=iCJLOX… The striking cover image was taken by Chalkie Davies. We’ll leave you with a bit from him regarding the contact sheet on slide two... + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + “David Bowie is one of the easiest people to work with, he's so good in front of the camera that you can do a record cover in a single roll of film. When you are on a movie shoot nothing endears you to the Director more than the ability to shoot fast. Everything was pre-lit and tested beforehand, all it needed was for David to step into the frame and pose for three minutes. Contact sheets can tell you a lot about both photographer and sitter, the twelve frames on a roll is now a thing of the past but back then it was the order of the day. When you have to hand over the sheets to the publicist you never know what you will get back from the artist, sometimes with Rock Stars only a single frame from a dozen rolls is marked, but that is not the case here. In the right hand strip you can see a small X, this was the choice of David's management, then he marked it up, excluding only two frames as bad photos, ignoring seven more frames as they were OK but not great. Then he has circled three of the frames including 4C, the one where he is smiling. The Art Director also marked a square around that same photo. I was very happy David chose it, but this surprised everyone who worked for him as he has never, before or since, smiled on a record cover.” + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + #AbsoluteBeginnersSingle #BowieChalkieDavies

@MickODeaArtist @jucopel I remember seeing him as a child on Grafton St during a visit to Dublin and then I remember him making an appearance at the Rakes of Mallow festival many years ago also when he drew a massive crowd. He was a true artist, RIP Thom

Christopher Nolan, not the director, but the Irish author and poet was a writer and human being of unique talent and circumstances. He was born in 1965 with severe cerebral palsy caused by oxygen deprivation at birth, which resulted in him being quadriplegic and unable to speak. However this seemingly impossible scenario didnt prevent his literary genious from emerging, nor did it define it. During Nolan’s early years medical professionals doubted his cognitive abilities, but his parents, Bernadette and Joseph, recognised his sharp intellect and curiosity. At age ten, a pivotal breakthrough arrived when a muscle-relaxant drug, Lioresal, granted him sufficient control to operate a "unicorn stick". This was a pointer attached to a headband. He would use it with the help from his Ma cupping his chin, and this unlocked the world for him allowing him to express himself one letter at a time. He attended Mount Temple Comprehensive school in Dublin, and I had the privilege of attending the same secondary school, albeit a few generations later. His intelligence and character were celebrated and nurtured here. And profoundly influenced his later writing. Today Mount Temple still honours his inspiractional memory with the "Eye of the Clock" awards. The prize is named after his book Under the Eye of the Clock (1987) which he titled for the beautiful gothic clock tower over the old block of that deadly school. After Mount Temple Nolan briefly studied at Trinity College Dublin but chose to dedicate himself fully to writing. Nolan’s prose has been likened to James Joyce and Samuel Beckett for its dense sophistication and inventive wordplay. And as I said, it doesnt dwell on limitation. Whilst Ive read Under the Eye of the Clock, I look forward to reading Dam-Burst of Dreams (1981) his first collection of poetry, plays, and short stories and The Banyan Tree (1999), which is a novel chronicling the life of an elderly woman on a Westmeath farm. His works won a Whitbread award, and he also received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters and the United Nations Society of Writers’ Medal of Excellence. Dont hold it against him but Bono, a fellow Mount Temple alumnus, cited Nolan’s miraculous breakthrough in communication as the inspiration for U2’s song “Miracle Drug.” Christopher Nolan sadly passed away in 2009 at the age of 43. His words and inspirational spirit live on.
