Genuine question to you good folks? What does one do in this situation in the UK? I emphasise the UK because we don't have guns. So can't shoot a mutt in the head. My natural instinct, if I saw this happening, I would firstly, try to stop the kid from struggling. This might sound mad but growing up, I had all kinds of rodents as pets. And if they bite you, its you trying to wriggle away that tears your skin and makes a little bite even worse because they grip on harder. But I am not a dog owner. My reasoning is that if something is clamped onto you and you struggle, it activates the prey drive. So I would be telling the kid to....play dead. Essentially. And whilst they are playing dead, I guess someone physically strong (not me) could straddle the dogs back and try to cut off the dogs air supply some how, so they let go of the kid? I am thinking maybe a belt or rope to choke the dog. Poke the dog in the eyes or up the nostrils too? I don't think stabbing the dog would help, unless one is uber precise in dog anatomy and could get it bang on on the kidney or liver or something. Unlikely a civilised person would have a long knife handy. But I don't know? What would you do?
