A war of attrition is the most expensive form of warfare. All it does is to wear down materiel and morale. ISWAP has launched coordinated attacks on two military bases in Pulka and the Mongunu super camp in Borno State within the past 24 hours. Now ISWAP has suffered heavy casualties in the Lake Chad region recent weeks due to intense operations by Nigerian troops. But the steady stream of weapons and supply from the Sahel to their sanctuaries in the Lake Chad means that Nigeria is unable to exhaust ISWAP manpower, even while inflicting significant casualties. Now the biggest problem to breaking this deadlock remains Nigeria's fundamentally defensive posture. We are yet to seriously challenge the territorial domination maintained by ISWAP in the Lake Chad. This allows ISWAP to consolidate and expand in Borno. Nigeria needs to commit overwhelming force against ISWAP enclaves in the Lake Chad region and decisively dismantle them, regardless of the cost.
