@DreyfusJames @BBCNews One of my favourite films of the 90s was "Priscilla Queen of the Desert". The drag performances in that film were full of talent and humour, with some risque jokes but not in-your-face misogyny like drag performances nowadays.

Dear @BBCNews I really don’t want to rain down ca-ca on your hourly drag queen dispatches, as you’re clearly in thrall to the “trans umbrella”, but here we go… Drag, broadly speaking, originated from the theatrical/vaudevillian world. It is a vocation. Or a job, if you’ve actual talent. The most famous in recent years including Lily Savage, Edna Everage, Divine, Danny La Rue, Regina Fong, Hinge & Bracket etc. To pull it off successfully you needed to have talent, a genuine flair for comedy & be able to have a two-way rapport with your audience. The crucial element was that it was clear to both performers & audience alike that you were not attempting to ‘be’ a woman, but that you were very much a man, in often exaggerated & flamboyant feminine costumes. The point THEN was NOT to denigrate or ape women in a derogatory sense, as is the case for so many “drag performers” today, who seem to believe that mocking, crudely imitating & sneering AT women is the point. All that displays is a gross lack of skill or talent, & a complete misunderstanding of its origins. ‘Vogueing’, ‘throwing shade’, runway competitions, bouncing your groin onto the floor, legs split apart owes more to the success of Ru Paul’s show, which lends more than a passing nod to the different runways & tea dances of, for example, the House of LaBeija, founded in ‘68 & ‘Ballroom’ sub-culture, in general. At the end of a drag queen’s show, the costume comes off, as does the wig & make-up. The performer remains resolutely male (or female if they’re a drag king.) I’ve skipped much history, and been very broad with my basic explanation but drag queens belong under the “trans umbrella” about as much as a fishmonger or an oral health hygienist does… Which, let’s face it, isn’t very much… Hopefully now, you’ll be able to focus on others who genuinely DO need to be supported, protected & aided. Please RT. Strangled account. As per. 🙏
