22 years ago, the European Court of Human Rights delivered a landmark ruling that changed the lives of transgender people across the UK forever. On July 11, 2002, the court ruled unanimously in favour of Christine Goodwin, a British trans woman who had faced severe workplace harassment, issues with her National Insurance contributions, and was denied the right to marry in her acquired gender. The Grand Chamber found that the UK's failure to legally recognise trans people's gender violated two fundamental rights under the European Convention on Human Rights. The Goodwin v. United Kingdom judgment became the catalyst for the Gender Recognition Act 2004, which finally granted transgender people in the UK full legal recognition in their acquired gender and the right to obtain new birth certificates. This archival footage captures the moment that reshaped trans rights in Britain.
