A young Syrian woman was killed in the Netherlands by her father and brothers: they believed she was bringing “shame” on the family 18-year-old Rayan Al-Najjar was found dead in a swamp near Amsterdam, with her mouth taped shut and her hands tied. The Dutch prosecutor’s office considers this an “honor killing.” The family decided the girl had “dishonored” them with her behavior — she lived a Western lifestyle and was dating a boyfriend. The accused are her brothers, 23-year-old Mohamed and 25-year-old Muhanad. They are charged with involvement in kidnapping and murder. According to investigators, the father, Khaled Al-Najjar, ordered his sons to take Rayan to a remote area and drown her. His DNA was found under her fingernails, indicating she resisted. Khaled fled to Syria and has been sending letters to the press claiming he killed his daughter alone. Prosecutors do not believe his confession. Rayan had been under police protection, but surveillance was lifted shortly before her death. The reason remains unknown. After the body was found, the brothers were arrested and remain in custody, insisting on their innocence. According to media reports, Khaled now lives in northern Syria and has remarried. The Netherlands cannot bring him back, as there is no official cooperation with the Syrian justice system. Syrian authorities say they are ready to help, but claim they have not received any requests from the Netherlands.
