Frustrated to see celebrities with no knowledge or connection to our sport taking center stage. I've lived and breathed this from birth—my father before me, and I’ve actually been a spokesperson for F1 @IMS who truly understands and is a pro racer and knows what it means. I used to believe this before I watched G5 football too.
I don’t blame fans who believe this. Nobody has time to watch 136 teams every season.
I blame the national media, who also don’t watch G5 football by the way, who push this kind of narrative on to the casual fan.
There are many, many, MANY examples of G5 teams beating top P4 teams.
Obviously the Cotton Bowl just a few years ago stands out to me, where Tulane beat #10 USC in what would have been a playoff game today.
Notre Dame, who literally played in the National Championship last season, lost to Northern Illinois.

The G5 thing is stupid because this isn't basketball where a team can get hot. These major upsets will never happen in football. Size, athleticism, depth. A G5 team will never match that with these schools.

@MarkScioneaux I’m not sure for Oregon vs JMU, I was driving back from Oxford during the game - but Tulane and Ole Miss were pretty even yardage wise at the half. Tulane even had more time of possession than Ole Miss. What killed Tulane was 0/4 on 4th down

Tulane and JMU were outgained in the playoffs by a COMBINED 81 yards.
Alabama and Miami (round 1 WINNERS) were outgained by a combined 150 yards.
Tulane and JMU also played two higher seeded teams in the first round.
Don’t let national media pushing narratives about G5 programs for ratings $ convince you that there’s a bigger talent discrepancy between top G5 teams and P4 teams than there actually is.

People want to talk about “special privileges” Notre Dame receives but forget that…
Alabama had 3 losses and gets an unwritten auto-qualifier for just making it to the SEC championship game as the FIFTH SEC team.
Miami gets in as a charity case for the ACC because Duke won the ACC with 5 losses making Miami the highest ranking ACC team.
We have two G5 teams ranked outside the top 15 in the playoff field.
THOSE are some special privileges.
Notre Dame now getting an auto-qualifier for being top 12 is just leveling the playing field.

Next year's College Football Playoff field will look different due to an agreement signed in 2024, assigning each Power 4 champion a berth into the postseason field, plus the highest ranked non-power league conference champion. If these new rules were used this year, Duke would have advanced into the field as the ACC champ, bumping out JMU, plus Notre Dame would replace Miami due to having a Top-12 guarantee.
