.@vonderleyen: Türkiye is: - a core #NATO ally, - a key migration partner, - an energy corridor, - a major defence actor on Europe’s flank, - and a serious regional power. Europe doesn’t get stronger by applying double standards or simplifying reality.

The European Union sought to ease tensions with Turkey after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen named the country alongside Russia and China, creating the impression that the NATO partner was seen as a potential threat. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

@paolomossetti @snakhooda If you cannot understand current geopolitics just read medieval history. The Turkish mongols presented a more subsrantial threat to Europe than Russians. They failed at the siege of Vienna in 1529, but they never abolished the dream to conquer Europe. The only obstacle is Greece

The same day the EU once again fails to use its leverage to slow Israel, Von der Leyen states: “We must succeed in completing the European continent so that it is not shaped by Russian, Turkish, or Chinese influence.” Turkey is, for the first time, placed in the same category as Russia and China: a systemic threat, precisely as an imperialist war, boosted by religious fanaticism, rages on the other side of the Mediterranean. And this happens at the very moment Netanyahu is escalating his campaign against Turkey. How Turkey can be seen as a greater threat than Israel by the majority of Europeans is a mystery. This is liberal nationalism laying bare its entrenchment and its clash-of-civilizations logic.

The argument that Rome fell because of immigration-driven population replacement doesn't really hold up when you look at the genetic and historical evidence. 90+% of the "immigrants" into Roman era Italy were ancient Greeks, coming from the most developed regions in the world with the most educated populations. They don't really count as immigrants since they were simply moving from one Roman province to another, and in most cases they were moving into areas of Italy that Greeks had already colonized and settled centuries earlier. The difference in the Imperial period is that they were now also moving into central and north Italy. So the basic premise of a totally foreign population flooding in is already wrong. What actually happened was the opposite of the decline story. They arrived centuries before the western collapse and a millennium and a half before the eastern one, and the populations they contributed to went on to produce some of the highest measured cognitive profiles in pre-modern Europe. Once you line up the genetics, the timeline, and the outcomes, this fairy tale falls apart. You can see their genetic contribution clearly in modern Italians, which hasn't changed much since antiquity apart from minor Germanic admixture in the north. Southern Italians (Calabria, Campania, Sicily) carry 63–67% Roman-era Ancient Greek-like ancestry. Central Italians (Lazio, Tuscany, Umbria, Marche) carry 49–56%. Even northern Italians (Lombardy, Veneto, Liguria) carry 29–33%. The same Roman-era Ancient Greek-like signal shows up at around 20% in Iberia. This is not a foreign population replacing natives because it's a continuation and expansion of a Mediterranean genetic cline that already existed. The samples from Imperial Italy, around 1–200 AD (after the big migration into Italy had already happened), were mostly Greek mixed, and scored higher on PGS EDU/IQ than other Europeans, higher even than medieval Europeans who lived 1,000 years later. So the so-called "immigrants" were still smarter than the surrounding European populations. The timeline alone destroys the argument of collapse due to population replacement. The main Roman-era migration into Italy happened around 150–50 BC. The western empire fell in 476 AD, roughly 500 to 600 years later. The eastern empire fell in 1453 AD, roughly 1,500 years later. What kind of "population replacement causes civilizational collapse" mechanism takes 600 to 1,500 years to produce its effect? At that point they're not actually describing a causal process, because when your supposed cause and effect are separated by 600 to 1,500 years with an entire functioning empire in between, they're just pointing at two distant events and asserting a connection without explaining how one led to the other. If you want to argue demographics mattered for 476 specifically, the only even remotely plausible candidate is Germanic migration, and specifically the fact that Germanic immigrants became overrepresented in military commands in the 4th and 5th centuries due to corrupt political decisions by emperors and regents. And those Germanics most likely had lower intelligence than the Italians they were displacing in military roles, since medieval samples from Germany and medieval Viking samples score lower on PGS IQ/EDU than Imperial Italian samples. But even this wasn't population replacement. It was a minority being overrepresented in military positions, not a demographic shift in Italy itself. The eastern half of the empire, populated by exactly the same Greek stock that had settled central Italy centuries earlier, continued for another 1,000 years and remained the most developed civilization for centuries after the West fell. The genetics were basically the same, yet the outcome was the opposite, which is something the hypothesis cannot explain. The actual genetic evidence, as far as it goes, points in the opposite direction. Pre-modern civilizations appear to show selection for higher intelligence and lower rates of mental disorders, not against.

Hellenist ☀️🏺⚡️@RealHellenist·
The land of modern Palestine is native to the Greeks, not to the Jews. Around 1200 BCE, during the Bronze Age Collapse, Mycenaean Greeks—later called Philistines—settled Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath, civilisational founders of the Pentapolis. The very name Palestine is derived from these Philistines, who brought Aegean pottery, Greek-style burials, and Mycenaean weapons. They ruled the southern Levant centuries before any so-called “Kingdom of Israel” ever emerged. Their civilisation declined after the fall of Mycenae. Foreign empires rose—Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians—who ruled through imperial administration, not through the Hellenic polis, defined by civic identity, public life, and philosophical culture. Then came Alexander the Great. With his conquest, Hellenism returned in glory. Under his successors, the Greeks built anew: Scythopolis, Gadara, Hippos, Gerasa, Pella, Philadelphia, Dion, Canatha, Raphana, and Abila—the Decapolis, a league of Hellenic cities crowned with temples, theatres, philosophy, and the rule of law. The coastline was Hellenised including Gaza, rebuilt by Alexander in gleaming marble; Ashkelon, once Mycenaean, later a Seleucid port; Apollonia, consecrated to the Olympian Gods; and Dora and Jaffa, fortified as Greek cities with ports, temples, and civic order. Though under Greek rule, Jerusalem remained a dusty hill-town, untouched by Hellenic refinement, unworthy of the polis. After crushing the Bar Kokhba revolt in 135 AD, the Romans renamed Judea as Syria Palaestina, not because Philistines ruled the highlands, but to erase Jewish claim and identity by invoking the older, non-Jewish name tied to the coastal Philistine Greeks. The name Palaestina evoked the Philistine Greeks, who built real cities in this land long before any mythical “Kingdom of Israel”. The Jews never built a city-state in the highlands no temples of marble, no civic institutions, no codified law. Their “kingdoms” live only in myth and scripture, not in ruins or stone. The Greeks, by contrast, left behind visible civilisation. The Hellenes were not foreigners to this land, they were its native civilisers. From the Mycenaean Greek Philistines of the Bronze Age to the Hellenic architects of the Decapolis, Hellenic presence was not a passing episode, but a continuous, ancestral force cultural, political, and civilisational. The Philistine Greeks were the first to build cities in this land, long before any Jewish state ever existed.

Hristos a înviat! Orthodox Easter requires the butchery and cooking of the entire lamb. Nothing is discarded. The holiday feast is built on heavy roasting, slow braising, and the intensive preparation of offal. Premium cuts like the leg and shoulder are subjected to prolonged, punishing heat. They are trapped under a heavy iron bell covered in glowing coals for the Balkan Jagnjetina ispod sača, or sealed tightly in parchment paper for Greek Kleftiko to cook entirely in their own rendered fat. However, the true core of the tradition relies on the internal organs. The pluck, consisting of the liver, lungs, and heart, is finely chopped and heavily seasoned. In Romania and Bulgaria, it is bound with eggs and baked into dense, solid blocks of Drob. In Greece, it is boiled down into Magiritsa, a thick soup heavily soured with lemon specifically designed to break the fast. The intestines undergo aggressive cleaning before being braided tightly over long skewers of sweetbreads to form Kokoretsi, which is roasted over an open fire until the outer layer shrinks and tightens into a hard crust. Even the lacy caul fat is utilized, stretched thin to wrap minced meat for Cypriot Sheftalia, melting completely into the coals. Finally, the lamb head is split and roasted whole until the cheek meat softens and the skull easily pulls apart.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy /
If the United States truly thinks about withdrawing from NATO, then European security will be based solely on the European Union. But not in its current form. I think that the EU is in a situation where it needs more countries. The UK, Ukraine, Türkiye, and Norway. These are four strong countries, which are part of Europe. Together, the UK, Ukraine, and Türkiye have armies that are stronger than Russia's army. Without Ukraine and Türkiye, Europe can’t match Russia. With the four countries on board you can wrest control of the seas, have secure skies and the largest land forces. It’s not about offense, because when Russia makes the decision to have an army of 2.5 million people by 2030, Europe has to think about security and how to preserve its independence. The UK once was a member of the EU. There are concerns about agriculture when it comes to Türkiye. But you can manage all of this if you have a really great economy. But security comes first, economy second. Not vice versa. From an interview on The Rest Is Politics podcast (5/5).
