In research, I’m finding this same impulse as one of the constants of the last few centuries of liberal democracy. The Right always attempts to repress then destroy representative government. It’s shocking how much this moment reflects a series of past incidents.

Over and over again, through history, you find the Right embracing violence and eventually dictatorship when the political tide turns and democracy is no longer in their favor. That’s what we’re watching now. A rejection of institutions and a lust for authoritarianism.

Rather than trying to ‘prevent radicalisation’, we should adopt a more constructive approach of addressing the underlying social & structural issues that are fuelling systemic inequality, injustice, racism, as well as a declining trust in institutions, govt authority & the media.

A productive approach to understanding causes of extremism is to search for commonality across extremist ideologies. 2 key issues are shared grievances & crisis of identity (individual, group or national). These are common among ISIS, extreme-right, anarchists & Incel extremists
