Viggo Mortensen performs "The Oath of Elendil" in Elvish, the song he sings during Aragorn's coronation scene.
In the film version of The Return of the King, Viggo Mortensen sings the "Oath of Elendil" during Aragorn’s coronation. While the words are spoken rather than sung in J.R.R. Tolkien’s book, Mortensen personally composed the melody for the scene and suggested the musical performance to director Peter Jackson.
The lyrics are in Quenya (High-Elven) and originate from the chapter "The Steward and the King." They represent the words Elendil spoke upon arriving in Middle-earth from the ruins of Númenor: "Et Eärello Endorenna utúlien. Sinomë maruvan ar Hildinyar tenn' Ambar-metta." Translated, this means: "Out of the Great Sea to Middle-earth I am come. In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.
