There has been talk about Uganda exporting its crude oil. This is a false narrative considering our waxy oil profile and the impossibility of it moving in trucks as suggested. If trucks were to be used, you would need thousands of them to make economic sense. Tullow Oil tried it in Kenya and discontinued it for lack of economic viability despite the liquid nature of the Kenyan oil in the Turkana region. #oilandgas

Today marks the end of the African Energy Week in Cape Town. What a Week! It started off with a powerful performance from the youth asking leaders to secure their future and make energy poverty history on our continent! The Man behind this unstoppable movement to drive energy conversations @nj_ayuk was unapologetic as always, asking governments and leaders to cut the red tape and get contracts approved fast to exploit our God-given resources to drive our development. Africa deserves the much-needed energy security to industrialize, create jobs for its young population and drive sustainable development. Speaker after speaker, including the Heads of States all united by a common interest; AFRICA’S SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. There’s no single economy in the world that has developed without the use of the most abundant and reliable energy- fossil energy! It is time for the “developing” Countries to actually develop! It was highlighted that it is estimated that by 2050, the world population will have increased by over 2 billion people, the demand for energy will only keep on rising!   Investments into technology to aid equitable and sustainable development must be prioritized. The IEA projects that the demand for petroleum products will rise to around 106m barrels per day by 2030. Like the APPO Secretary suggested, if the developed countries could focus on technology to harvest even just 25% of the emissions in the atmosphere, it would go along way in balancing the emissions contributions as Africa embarks on massive industrialization to drive its development.   Overall, at the end of the week, especially as countries prepare for Cop28, it is an optimistic picture painted that the Continent will begin to speak with one voice; Africa is rich, it shouldn’t survive on aid!  The continent deserves to sustainably produce and utilize its natural resource to end poverty. #AEW2023

Discussing the refinery, the UNOC CEO emphasised the need for the 60,000 bpd capacity refinery. While final investment decisions may extend beyond June 2023, she affirmed that we're actively seeking partners for a decision in 2024 and commissioning in 2027. An update on EACOP was also provided where attendees were informed that the pipeline is making strides with completed legal infrastructure and government agreements. Works have begun in Tanzania, and we're on track to achieve first oil in 2025 as planned.
