Right before lunch is the bubbly @clevslima to tell us about changes in energy reserves and gene expression during recovery from freezing in the Antartica midge ! #ISEPEP9

The ability of recovering from freezing is very rare among insects, but B. antarctica, the only insect endemic to Antarctica, is one of the few that can do it. In this talk, I discussed the mechanisms underlying this cool adaption to the most dramatic environment in the world.

Dr. Bedulina’s talk was amazing. It’s exciting to hear about novel research on extremophile animals on first hand! Sounds even harder to collect amphipods (and differentiate males and females) than it is to collect Belgica antarctica!

Laura Unfried on #SICB2022 talking about rapid cold hardening (RCH) and it’s effects on reproductive behavior. She suggests that although RCH protects against cold injury (cell death), one long-term counter effect is that it can highly reduce offspring. Great work!

I’m not in the genetics business, so it may be my fault, but it was the first time I saw GWAS being used to investigate correlation between thermal variation and plasticity in flies, and its super interesting. Loved that
