965 hPa low pressure system south of WA running into a 1040 hPa high over TAS.

Over 100mm of rain (locally way more) over widspread areas of the Amazon this week. The pattern is largely due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) influence and monsoon activity, both gradually shifting to the northern hemisphere over coming weeks.

#Europe is about to feel #cold air returning this week, and in some places temperatures will fall to values more typical of early spring . The driver is the jet stream pattern over Europe, combined with high pressure to the west, helping pull cold air from the Arctic.

Heavy rain and strong winds hit south-western South Africa yesterday and are expected to continue until Tuesday ☔ The heaviest rain is falling today, likely to impact Cape Town, with some areas likely to see a month’s worth of rain 👇

It’s going to be a chillier week ahead, with cold fronts introducing cooler air across the UK 🌡️ We’ll see a touch of frost in places across the south tonight, but winds will pick up, limiting the frost risk by midweek ⤵️

Let’s take another visit to the southern hemisphere, where another beast will be born. South Africa is now being hit by a powerful low but look at this monster storm that will develop off of South America this weekend. Widespread impacts appear likely. @climatejulien

A period of heavy #rainfall is expected this week along the #Chile #Argentina border, with the highest accumulations expected to exceed 100 mm, with locally higher amounts possible. This type of event is associated with occluded frontal systems.

A strong extratropical cyclone has formed off the coast of #Argentina — bringing wind impacts across coastal areas of #Uruguay, the La Plata Basin, and southern #Brazil. As it moves toward the Atlantic, it is driving a surge of polar air into southern South America.
