The Opposite of Depression
The opposite of depression is not joy. Depression literally means to “press down.” Depression, repression and suppression all mean roughly the same thing — to press down, hold back or press under — to not allow, especially negative emotions, to be ex-pressed. Expression, conversely, literally means to “press out.”
Thus, the opposite of depression is expression and, especially, creative expression.
The Path of Art will lead you out of depression.
And, when negativity has been expressed — pressed out of your being — the natural state of a human is what results. And that natural state is joy, love, peace and creativity. That is why it seems like the opposite of depression is joy - because once you express the negativity, you do experience joy. When you stop contracting around the negativity and expand into harmony with the current, it is a great relief. And, since peace, love, creativity and joy are the essence of spirituality, the path of Art is ultimately a spiritual path which, essentially, is the message of the classic book The Artist’s Way and a major message of this book.

This is what "founder mode" really is. And it's different for every single founder. Founders, artists, poets, musicians: all cut from the same cloth.
Create.

@yogacid We are all, when centered, our true self.
We know when we are in that harmonious place, but it can’t really be expressed in language.
That’s why it sounds like riddles or nonsense when trying to explain it.

My Zen teacher used to ask me this question: who are you when there’s nothing to be done, when there’s no problem to solve?
I’ve been asking myself this question for the better part of the past decade, letting it sink in, finding answers in the most simple places.
Mostly, I find answers when I sit or lay still for a while, with my eyes closed, with my attention on present moment sensations. When I eat mushrooms and pay attention to what they’re sharing. Or, when I take in the epic magnificence of a mountain, ocean, bug, eagle, or some other sacred being.
The answer doesn’t come as a word or through the intellect though.
I feel it.
Tuning into this feeling, and cultivating it through simple and grounded practices such as mindfulness meditation, conscious connected breathing and compassionate service has allowed me to know myself beyond the temporary roles I play.
Much of our identities and self-worth are derived from what we do for others, society and ourselves. From the ways in which we are “productive” or “useful” to another or to oneself. Yet, there’s more (or less) to ourselves than the roles we adopt.
Many people identify as caretakers, or by their profession, or by what they’re passionate about, or by where they fit in socially or in their family tree.
But who are you when you take all that away?
The spiritual traditions aim to offer an answer to this essential self-inquiry.
Different traditions have different answers, but all traditions bring us back to our root, our essence, our true nature. Most traditions involve the breath or centre the breath in some practical and meaningful way. The traditions use various techniques and words, but all point to the same thing.
Another way of asking the question might be:
Who are you originally?
I can’t answer this for you but, in my experience, it’s worth finding out. This is because when you rediscover your true nature, you will know an abiding peace and a powerful capacity to love. You may also find a boundless source of creativity. All these qualities are very helpful to ourselves and the people we care about.
I've found mindfulness meditation, conscious connected breathwork and intentional use of psychedelics to be the most effective and direct paths to wholeness. The best part is, you don't have to believe in anything. These techniques are simple, natural, and timeless, and require only dedication to practice.
Most powerfully and simply, remember this: the breath guides us home to our original essence.
Try following it and see where it brings you.
