Specifically prior intent, the intent to kill is irrelevant after being aggressed upon, which is why self defense is really up to the victim to decide how much force they are willing to use to defend themselves.
If a person has prior intent to kill, before self defense would be hypothetically "authorized" then that's what differentiates self defense from murder/manslaughter/assault.
The wording after the action, in this case running over somebody, used afterwards can be used against him to argue prior intent to commit harm before self defense would be arguable.
Again, I'm not well versed in the context of what happened, so it 100% could have been self defense, or it could not have been, but the wording can be used by prosecutors to argue prior intent to commit harm.
