@aleams Me too. But we aren’t the entire marketplace, sadly.
Which begs a chicken/egg question, then. Does behavior of the market dictate what creators/companies make? Or can we as creators STEER the market how we want it? And if so, how?
How do we make THEM care about story first?

@cloudwrangler That's true except I'm against the collectible part of it. I'm in it for the story, not the variant covers.

Lately, I've been seeing articles and ads for new comics that only discuss the variant covers.
I know this isn't a new thought, but we do realize we're selling the story inside, right?
Sure, talk covers, but can we keep the focus on why the covers are there?

@cloudwrangler I agree that great comics with unmissable covers are important. However, an unmissable cover isn't the same as what the industry is currently trending towards; variant covers as commodities and the story inside as secondary.

@aleams Wuite literally a “2 things can be true at the same time” convo on the surface (pun intended.) It CAN be a great story AND collectible.
But FOR ME, it would have to be BOTH: a story I FEEL and a cover that feels unmissable.
That’s BRUTALLY hard, and so obvious when it misses.

@aleams I remember the Marvel Hip-Hop album cover variants. I bought a decent number because they were the right combo of a book or character I loved AND an album I loved or respected. That was a small fraction of the total output.
And some of them I read and THAT ISSUE was just.. meh.
