Lots of replies say their company could not do this even if they wanted to because of regulations. I remember banks saying they cannot do CD because of regulations. Then neobanks like Monzo came along and deploy hundreds of times/day. Same "regulations" twitter.com/GergelyOrosz/s…

@ChasanisNickos Companies where the justification is that you don't have "authorization" are, more often than not, hierarchical companies. Software engineers (often referred to as "IT") often don't make decisions: they execute them. blog.pragmaticengineer.com/what-silicon-v…

Forget 10x engineers, go for 10x teams. This paper analyzes 200k teams ranging from sports to politics, and finds that performance follows a power law 70% of the time. So there are a lot of star teams & those teams perform much better than average ones. pubsonline.informs.org/doi/10.1287/or…

It applies to startups too. They often avoid hiring middle managers, for fear that it will make their company bureaucratic & less innovative. But this paper shows the opposite is true: startups become 33% more likely to develop product innovations when they add middle mangers!

And not just manufacturing! My paper shows the difference in quality among managers in the game industry (called "producers" as the founder of EA thought it sounded Hollywood) accounted for 22% of variation in game revenue - much more than any other role! papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…

Good middle managers matter a lot! Who the plant manager is in car factory explains more of the productivity difference between plants than who the CEO of the company is. Replacing a bottom quartile manager with a top quartile one decreases hours needed to build a car by 30%.

In software, when something is painful, the way to reduce the pain is to do it more frequently, not less.

Ppl who outsource software often say that a company should focus on its core business. More and more, tho, software _is_ the company’s core business, whether or not they see it like that. If you fail without it, it’s a core capability. Instead of outsourcing, learn how to do it.
