New academic year, new beginnings! I’m excited to share that I have started a new position as an Associate Professor at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) in Yunnan, China 🇨🇳 XTBG has been a place close to my heart, due to its vibrant research community, friendly working environment, and stunning landscapes. I’m deeply grateful to XTBG and the Chinese Academy of Sciences for their trust and support in my research. I look forward to collaborating with colleagues here to produce exciting and impactful work. Stay tuned for announcements about graduate and postdoctoral opportunities in our lab! #XTBG #ecological #research #biodiversity #conservation

In this preprint (link in the comments), we review emerging applications of LLMs in ecology and conservation science and discuss limitations, risks, and future directions. As LLMs become increasingly integrated into scientific workflows, we hope this work will be useful to ecologists and others.

I remember being in Cyprus in 2022, when the Global #Biodiversity Framework was being negotiated and adopted at #COP15 in Canada, and noticing how little attention the event received in the local #media. As a result, most people were unaware that the summit was even taking place — let alone how important it was. It turns out this was part of a more widespread pattern. In this study, we compare #global media coverage of COP15 with that of the climate change summit, COP27, which took place just a month earlier in Egypt. We find that COP15, despite its significance in setting global biodiversity #targets for the decade, received far less media attention than COP27. In fact, it was even covered less than some popular cultural figures. We argue that media coverage plays a critical role in #mobilizing action to address biodiversity loss and recommend strategies for #increasing coverage of biodiversity-related issues. Pro tip for writers: Don’t rush the submission step I know you’re exhausted & just want to hit “submit,” but those annoying little details- suggesting reviewers, suggesting editors, explaining your paper in exactly 97 words- can make a real difference Take the time It’s worth it

🌿 Our new study, published in the Journal of Apicultural Research, shows that maintaining forests near coffee farms in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, India, supports higher abundances of key wild pollinators 🐝. Farms with native shade trees also tended to host more pollinators, suggesting that maintaining both nearby forests and native tree cover may help sustain pollination services in coffee landscapes. This project was supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. A link to the full study is available in the comments.

~ This study compares media coverage and internet searches related to recent climate and biodiversity COPs, and reveals that the biodiversity COP received far less attention… Both crises are interlinked and might be best if addressed together. nature.com/articles/s4418…
