#BREAKING: Somalia’s federal government said Friday it would press ahead with one-person, one-vote elections, rejecting opposition demands after three days of talks failed to resolve a deepening political dispute over the country’s electoral path. In a statement issued in Mogadishu on May 15, the government said Somalia had entered the stage of moving towards a democratic system based on direct voting, arguing that citizens must be allowed to exercise their constitutional right to vote and stand for office. The statement came as opposition leaders intensified claims that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s four-year mandate expires on May 15, 2026, four years after parliament elected him. Government allies reject that argument, saying recent constitutional amendments extended federal mandates to five years. The government said it had held continuous consultations with election stakeholders and different sections of Somali society, adding that talks over the past three days with some opposition figures had not produced a breakthrough. It accused the opposition representatives of presenting proposals that contradicted the basic rights of citizens to elect and be elected. “Therefore, the Federal Government of Somalia shares with the Somali people that the country will hold a one-person, one-vote election that is free, fair, transparent and in accordance with the constitution, the laws of the country and the political programme promised by the government,” the statement said. The government said the door to dialogue and consultation remained open, but its statement made clear it would not abandon the direct election model.
