I believe baseball can open powerful academic doors for the right student-athlete. But the path has to be honest. Prep school is not for everyone. A post-grad year is not for everyone. Showcases are not magic. College recruiting is not one-size-fits-all. I built Coach Beede to help families slow the process down, ask better questions, and build a plan around development, academics, maturity, and fit. I have lived this as an athlete, a college head coach, and most importantly, as a parent.

Sunday thought for baseball families: You cannot scout your way out of a fit problem. You can attend every showcase, hire every consultant, take every visit — and still end up at the wrong school if you skipped the honest conversation about who your son actually is. Start there. Everything else gets easier.

A hard truth I share with every family who calls me. Your son's recruiting outcome is not a measure of his worth, his work ethic, or your parenting. It is a measure of fit. Once families internalize that, the entire process becomes quieter and more productive. Tomorrow night I'm dropping a thread on the six conversations every family should have before commitment. The ones that get skipped most often are the ones families wish they hadn't.

The summer between sophomore year and junior fall is not just another travel season. It is the window where college coaches build their lists. The families who treat it like a casual summer fall behind. The families who treat it like a marathon , paced, intentional, with clear goals will pull ahead. Both decisions look the same in June. They do not look the same in October.

Parents — what is the one question you wish you had asked on your son's official visit that you didn't think to ask? I will compile the best ones and share them back this week.

This is the time of year when baseball families can feel overwhelmed. High school seasons are ending. The portal is moving. Summer showcases are coming. Rosters are shifting. Other athletes are posting commitments. Most families are not behind. They need clarity.

The Ivy League recruiting calendar is unlike any other. No athletic scholarships. Likely letters, not National Letters of Intent. The Academic Index governs everything. Coaches operate within strict admissions windows. If your son is targeting Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Penn, Columbia, Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth — the recruiting timeline starts a year earlier than D1 elsewhere.

Most families think recruiting is about getting noticed. After 35 years, I can tell you it is the opposite. The student-athletes who succeed are the ones who get clear before they get noticed. Clear on what level fits. Clear on what schools fit academically. Clear on what kind of program their son will actually thrive in. Visibility without clarity creates noise, not offers.

If you are at a showcase or tournament this weekend, three things college coaches notice in the first five minutes — before your son ever touches a ball: How he carries his bag from the car How he greets his coach Whether he warms up with intention or with chaos Recruiting starts before first pitch.

@CoachBeede If you get off to a rough start, how do you earn playing time throughout season. JC never had live ABs. Conference starting quickly. My son finally got chances and made most of them vs postgrad teams 1/2 way thru season. Started some conference games at end of season.

Three things I have watched separate the student-athletes who get recruited from the ones who get overlooked. None of them are velocity or exit velo: They answer their own emails. They ask coaches better questions than their parents do. They show up to camps with a plan, not a hope. Recruiting rewards maturity earlier than most families realize.
