@pointingdogguy @bboev8 this is the way. also as an umpire, always tell the coach in or out if he questions you, because he has a better look at up & down than the ump lol

If you’re umpiring HS baseball or softball and a catcher respectfully asks you where a pitch missed at and your response is to bark back at them with “I’m back here and I can see it better than you can.” I’d say you should probably find a different hobby from 4:30-6:30pm

@nickstrong I honestly don’t know what the right or wrong answer is on this. Both could be right. I know the advice my son got was, don’t accept an offer if you there’s a chance you back out for a different offer. And either way I think most coaches are always looking for someone better.

Accept the offer. Let the coach know, there are possibilities of me choosing another option if it becomes available. However, accept the fact that coach will also be looking for other options to replace or bring in if I choose not to show. Wanna hear your opinions.

I imagined ABS fixing the ridiculous misses. The fact we are judging umpires on a 100 mph pitch with filthy movement, and judging them on missing it by 1/10th inch means we have lost the plot.

Gavin Newsom called Nick Shirley every GROSS name in the book for exposing fraud in California. Now Newsom says HE is leading the charge on fraud using Nick’s revelations as his own. Gavin Newsom is just a VILE LIAR. Gross!

@coachzblair10 Never, I don’t think my kid ever missed a practice. His freshman year of college he got really sick. Told me he went to practice anyway and the coaches said “you look like hell, come back when you feel better”. lol

@crich55372 @ericdevincenzi @bboev8 I’ve seen guys call strikes 2 balls off the plate consistently. I personally try to call a rulebook strike zone at the varsity level. They are used to getting that pitch off the plate called, so I have no issue letting them know that’s too far outside for me.

@ericdevincenzi @bboev8 Totally agree! If a borderline low pitch is called a ball… then OBVIOUSLY it was low. Same with borderline outside…. It was outside. Asking the question is a passive aggressive way to argue the call.

@wjeffpetty What I’ve seen the last few years in 9u baseball. Pitcher walks kid, kid steals second and 3rd on next 2 pitches, takes home on a passed ball. Repeat for the next 2 hours/3 innings and game ends due to time limit. Score 20-15 and there was 1 base hit all game.

Excuse my ignorance on this. What year did we start letting 9 year olds take leads & steal bases? When we were 12 foot had to be on the base. Stealing at 9 years old & taking leads might be the dumbest thing to date I have seen on a baseball field at any level.

@CoachSwit @NorCalU1 There are a lot of things we see in the MLB that we don’t want to see HS players emulating. Unfortunately that is what they do, or try to do. HS kids aren’t the ones that started the “watching HR’s and flipping the bat 20 feet in the air” either.

@CoachHPrice @FixingEducation Wouldn’t this be a problem for their parents to address? If they fail classes, take them out of the club sport just like failing classes makes them ineligible for participating in school sponsored sports.

Should schools in America run sports programs, or should local communities take them over like in parts of Europe? This wouldn’t eliminate sports, just shift them to club systems and free up school resources for academics. Would this be better for students?

@catchblockthrow I always try to ask the catchers when they come out in the first inning if their pitcher throws anything special. 99.9% of the time the only reply is “he has a curveball”. lol

Reminder for catchers to PREPARE the umpire for the pitcher you are catching. Give the umpire a quick scouting report on your guys arsenal. FB movement, shape of breaking ball, what area of zone he is most effective, ect. Want to make sure umpire not caught off guard by a pitch because of how it plays. Example: “Hey Tim (Umpire) this reliever Nolan Ryan has an explosive FB at top of the zone. Where we plan to live. CB is a hammer 12-6 shape. Will use change vs lefties that sinks. Hasn’t walked anyone since he was 12 yrs old.” Exchange can be quick. Main thing is to make sure ump is not caught off guard by a pitch in a big situation.

@JkroegerJt @CrusadersBBNY Well said. We have about 60 umpires in my HS association. I’d say less than 5 are doing it because they need the money, and it’s not much. In my opinion 98% of us are doing the best job we can. Yes, some are better than others, but nobody is trying to do a bad job.

First off, its a great start to the school season. I tip my hat to the coaches, umpires and people that make hs baseball still a good game to watch. Bashing people who are giving up their time on social media is not the way to go. For every mediocre umpire I see a hundred good ones. I probably see as many games as anyone. At the end of the day, people are doing their best.

@CoachSwit As a HS umpire I see a lot of baseball in a season. In my opinion there are a lot of HS coaches that care more about a win than their players health. Or, know nothing about arm health. I’ve watched them continue to throw kids that were hurting for more innings in a game.

H.S. baseball opening week. D1 commits throwing 100+ pitches in 45°. College coaches must love that. Shouldn’t matter if you’re a D1 commit or not… but this is just wild. Why are we doing this?

@SteveTeel17 @JkroegerJt @TeelHank @mailmanumpire Hate to see that. However I’ve also had coaches complain all game long when their pitcher isn’t getting that pitch. Can’t have it both ways. I catch flak for having a tight zone more often than not. My opinion is if it’s HS varsity baseball it needs to be close to a strike.

@TomDeMatteo @SteveTeel17 @JkroegerJt @TeelHank @mailmanumpire Is the batter guessing on outside pitches too then? I agree those were terrible calls. But, when you set up middle of the plate you take foul balls off the mask a lot more frequently. Only takes a few of those and you start flinching and missing more pitches.

@BLocsports Agree. Not sure why the ump called time. Should have stayed a live ball and error on the catcher. Runner could have easily hustled to 3rd since it didn’t look like anyone went after the ball.
