Gregg Popovich is a Legend.
He has won five NBA Championships and has been coaching the Spurs for 28 years!
It's unheard of in professional sports today.
Here are 10 Insights into the Greatness of "Pop."
1: TEAM - "It’s not about any one person. You’ve got to get over yourself and realize that it takes a group to get this thing done."
Coach Pop is all about TEAM. His entire focus is WE > ME. Selfish play or selfish thought is not allowed.
2: ADVERSITY - "The measure of who we are is how we react to something that doesn’t go our way."
How you handle adversity is the accurate measure of a person's character. This is what TEAM Sports is all about. Coach Pop teaches life skills, even in the NBA.
3: TRUST - "I can’t make every decision for you. I don’t have 14 timeouts. You guys got to get together and talk."
Coach Pop teaches his guys how to play, react, and adapt. He lets them take the lead in huddles and asks for their opinions, which earns him trust.
4: ROLES - "We believe in people executing their role and caring about the team more than anything individually."
Coach Pop talks about Role Definition all the time. He clearly defines these roles for his players, and his players know and excel in their roles.
5: SIMPLICITY - "Basketball is a pretty simple game. What wins is consistency and competitiveness."
Less is more. Simple wins. Coach Pop knows this. He applies it to his teams, and they consistently win.
6: UNSELFISHNESS - "No one is bigger than the team. If you can’t do things our way, you’re not getting time here, and we don’t care who you are."
Coach Pop does not tolerate selfish players. Players who do not buy into the TEAM concept don't last. It is a top priority.
7: PRACTICALITY - "I try not to get impressed. I just try to look at what I see."
Coach Pop lives in the moment. He is practical and reasonable in his approach. He has seen a lot and lives in the present.
8: WISDOM - "The older you get, the more you try to appreciate what you’ve accomplished."
Great Wisdom from Coach Pop. He realizes how hard it is to win. Live in the moment and appreciate the memories that they provide. You never know if you will get them back.
9: THE PRESENT - "I’m not too interested in talking about the past. It doesn’t do us any good whatsoever."
Learn from the past, but live in the moment. Coach Pop is always looking ahead to the next game or practice. Get better each day.
10: DO RIGHT - "It’s never been my goal to be king of the prom. It’s my goal to do the right thing and get the job done."
Simple Man with a simple plan. Do what is right. Play the right way. Be consistent. No need for the limelight.
