One thing elite coaches like Jim McGuinness understand: Warm-ups don’t need to be complicated. Simple movements. Ball in hand. Players thinking. This is one of his warm-ups 👇 #GAA #WarmUp

A common verdict after a GAA loss: “They weren’t fit enough.” But often the judgement is flawed. ⚡ The speed player finishes last in long runs. 🔋 The endurance player finishes last in sprints. Both get labelled “unfit”. In reality they just have different engines. #GAACoaching

A common mistake in GAA conditioning: Training every player like they have the same engine. But most squads actually have: ⚡ speed players 🔋 endurance players 🔁 hybrids Sports science recognises this. Most club training doesn’t. Thread 🧵

@MillaCoach Thanks Cyril. It can of course be done differently with the science support but this could help a lot of club coaches and steer in right direction

This way: ⚡ speed players stay explosive 🔋 endurance players get work rate 🔁 hybrids get both Different engines. Same training session. Good coaching often means simplifying good science. #GAACoaching #SmartTraining #Coaching

A simple club solution: Include three different conditioning exposures each week: ⚡ Speed work 4–6 × 20–30m accelerations Full recovery. 🔁 Repeated sprint work 6–8 × 40–50m 20–30s rest. 🔋 Game conditioning 4v4 / 5v5 small-sided games

The best interview feedback I received as a young coach hurt a lot: “Temi I’ve seen you in two sessions and I’ve yet to see you demonstrate.” I thought I had a good session structure and engaged well with the players. But it transformed my coaching. A demo can paint 1000 words It doesn’t need to be perfect It needs to be purposeful So don’t hide behind your voice. Pick up the ball & show them.

@AnalysisKings A warm-up isn’t designed to replicate the full game. It’s to activate players, get touches, scanning and timing right before throw-in. The decision-making work happens across the entire training week.

@coachcaff Played very poorly and quite lacklustre after it. No resemblance to game scenario and very little decision making. Wont be used by them this year.

@movementcoachkm @coachcaff I agree with Kevin on this one. I’m all for coaches creating fun warm-ups, but there’s also plenty of evidence to support warm-ups being routine and repeated. They also serve as daily movement screen

@CreeshMc Thanks Sean. Agree 100% about complicating things to look good.

@coachcaff Covers basics, soft hands, angled runs with a shot finish. We can complicate things sometimes but this is brilliant 👌

@charliemurrin Another reason this warm-up works: Players must: • run support lines • give early options • release the ball quickly • finish under fatigue All before the game even starts.

@coachcaff It builds nicely. Starts with dynamic stretches and movement then they introduce footballs and go from there.

@charliemurrin Why it works: • players scanning while moving • constant support angles • quick hands and decision making • finishes with a score Warm-up becomes skill work.

@coachcaff The Donegal warm-up is a good template for any team. Simple drills and besides the extra balls added to the weave, 2 coaches can run it.
