Mallard Creek senior track star Nyan Brown — at the center of a "taunting" scandal that has garnered national attention and cost his team a third straight state title — was a 2025 indoor state championship NCHSAA sportsmanship winner. More below

Well I would certainly be interested to see if this is true in the Mallard Creek track situation.

Mallard Creek’s Nyan Brown said this, in a statement on social media. “While I am disappointed in the final decision, I believe this moment creates an opportunity for a larger conversation within track and field about allowing young athletes to celebrate major accomplishments.”

The NFHS own guidance says it shouldn't be a DQ. Contrary to social media, there is no rule that explicitly says you can't celebrate just before crossing the line. It's made up. It's about taunting or interfering regardless of if it's before or after the line.

Mallard Creek boys track and field was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct after winning the 4x400 relay in the final event of the day. Had the result stayed, the Mavericks would have won the team state championship. Instead, they remained in second place. The Observer reviewed several photos of other athletes who participated in the state championships Saturday and found many had similar celebrations to the one that got Mallard Creek disqualified. View at link below: charlotteobserver.com/sports/high-sc…

@Christ15796John @BDillon612 The problem is that there is a collage out there of the rest of the athletes who did more than the athlete who didnt receive a warning or DQ...this thing has gained so many eyes that folks are reacting without full knowledge of the situation

@BDillon612 @CoachJGrice He turned his hand backwards to show that he was getting rings. Just like Angel Reese. It couldn't be clearer in the rules. It wasn't raw emotion. It was disrespectful showboating.

Salute to this kid for handling this insane situation better than I ever would have...the over policing of young men with poor judgment calls has to stop..lets look at the spirit vs the letter of the rules and make sense of it...Time and Circumstance matter!

@AaronGogley Warned about what specifically? What activity constitutes violation of the warning? We have to be specific in these instances as the penalty is severe

Negative. The rules are in place for good reason. They were told at coaches meeting and then warned again. “Unacceptable conduct by a competitor includes, but is not limited to: willful failure to follow the directions of a meet official.”

Taking my reporter hat off for a second, I'm baffled that Mallard Creek's Nyan Brown was called for a DQ for basically showing the back of his hand while crossing the finish line. I don't know the letter of the law rules here, but he was fully aware that he was about to win his school a third straight championship. Kids, adults, all of us, would get excited in a moment like this. I didn't see any effort to taunt or show anyone up. Sometimes we need to huddle up and review the tape and come up with the right call. Seems like we missed this one.
