The University Interscholastic League (UIL) is allowing a female student who attends Plano West High School in Texas to participate in the girls' competitive wrestling team while taking performance-enhancing drugs under the guise of "medical necessity."
In 2023, the state of Texas passed SB 14, which prohibits the transitioning of minors via procedures and treatments.
Christie Kaminski, a mother of one of the competing students, stated:
"My daughter was forced to wrestle Kenneth on Saturday, February 10th. She lost by pin. Kenneth Checkon went on to win 3rd in the Girls 132 Lb division, bumping my daughter to 4th and knocking out other girls from advancing to state. These girls would have been disqualified if they had used performance-enhancing drugs. Girls who worked hard and developed their muscles and skill level without cheating. Girls that could use a state win for scholarships, awards, and opportunity."
The student, who goes by the name "Kenneth" Checkon, will be competing this Friday at the Berry Center in Cypress, TX.
Students who choose to use performance-enhancing drugs should not have the option of competing in competitions against students that would be punished for the very same behavior. Transitioning is a choice, it is not a medical necessity for their health, which is the excuse given by the UIL. The UIL policy forbids performance-enhancing drugs. The loophole they are attempting to use is that it is "medically necessary," which SB 14 rejects.
The parents, the UIL, and the medical team for "Kenneth" need to be investigated immediately for ignoring the law in Texas.
