@jhartikainen Another phenomenon I've noticed: everybody thinks their own AI generated code is great, but everybody else's AI generated code is "too long unreadable cringe slop" The really humbling part is coming back to your own AI generated code 3 months later and seeing it as slop

@chinedu_10 I'm genuinely surprised when I have to explain to people that indexes slow down writes Seems like the most obvious thing. For one thing, if indexes speed up reads, the natural follow up question is "why don't you just index everything by default?"

I have another take. Most devs who don’t read books won’t learn this unless they get curious enough to check why their writes are suddenly slow in prod (p50/p95/p99). A lot of people never work on systems with enough traffic for slow writes to become obvious, so they never go looking. The ones who do learn it are usually the ones who investigate and realize “OMG… too many indexes have a tradeoff too” 😂
Austin@IamAroke

Indexes don't just speed up reads. They slow down writes. Every index you add is a tradeoff. Most developers only learn this in production.

@a_hafez12 You think this is a joke. I still remember a friend of mine put together a static site with over 200 direct dependencies because he was experimenting with creating a "best practices starter" 🤦‍♂️ Sometimes I wish I did iOS dev

@KaiXCreator People who think the hard part of being a founder is the code probably shouldn’t be founders.

@GregorySchier Same. Before fatherhood I'd drink 1-2x/week, watch tv shows most nights, etc. After fatherhood maybe drink 5x/year and only TV show I've watched is Fubar

Pro tip for mothers day: stop ordering from 1-800-Flowers or the other big aggregators. They're slow, incredibly overpriced, and their service sucks. Order from a local florist on DoorDash or similar 50% cheaper, delivered in a couple of hours

@DanShappir This is a surprisingly good metaphor The other side of the metaphor: people thought serverless would replace servers on the basis of cost and availability, but turns out 1) serverless is too complex, 2) cold starts, 3) serverless doesn't solve any real problems

Agents are to developers kind of as serverless is to servers: you can get as much or as little as you need, on demand, as long as you're willing to pay for it.

@a_hafez12 Yeah I agree people are more concerned about GitHub than the US economy... I'm the opposite. Entire industries have been in "extend and pretend" mode since 2022 or more - airlines not even the worst of it.

@SamyDindane What sort of moralizing are you seeing? I use ChatGPT, my only complaint is that it is a bit midwit; but it's trained on Reddit so that's just a consequence of the training data

Considering switch my main LLM from ChatGPT to Claude. Years of great output, but the holier-than-thou moralizing is getting annoying. Claude doesn't do that. Who else faces this with GPT?
