I know many people my age who feel they have “wasted time” getting their humanities degree because their career is not directly related to it. A reminder that the notion that getting an education is only useful if it converts into profit is, in itself, a perverse capitalist idea.

@coffeetotheorem We’re not allowed to teach novels in my current district. We use a curriculum that contains excerpts only. Many school districts have banned English teachers from teaching any novels and require us to use scripted curriculum that only contains short excerpts.

The obsession with teaching reading “skills” is a large part of the reason English classes have eliminated novels from the curriculum. The argument is you can teach the “skill” with just an excerpt. No need to read a whole book!
