It wasn’t until December 12, 1964, that Kenya officially became a republic, with Kenyatta assuming the role of President.

This meant that Kenyatta remained Prime Minister, while Queen Elizabeth II was Kenya’s head of state. Kenyan policies were formulated in London, and Kenyatta’s decisions required royal approval.
