@jhaleauthor Amazing - I have been trying for a couple of weeks. The batch with yeast rose nicely with bubbles, then it turned to soup with an oily film on it. I started again, this time without yeast. Looks good for the second day. Get a bread machine!

I feel so accomplished. It took about 2 months to figure it all out, but I made my own sourdough starter from scratch and just succeeded (after a handful of failed attempts) in making my first sourdough sandwich loaf! I’m addicted to baking now. 🙊

I designed this basic logo about 12 years ago. Paid $40 on a logo maker website. It was a struggle getting my long company name to fit. Now AI could make me a real fancy one for free, but I'm gonna keep this one. 🙂🇺🇸

It is...ANACS AU50 - Misaligned dies - Novices would call this an off-center strike, even though the reverse is a perfect strike.

I moonlight as a head high school track coach at a public school in PA. In my 11th year. I have 3 home schooled kids on my team. They are outstanding, well rounded kids. One problem with homeschooling is that MANY parents are so busy working that they have no time to homeschool their kids. Another problem is that some parents are completely unqualified to teach anybody anything. Our public schools where I live are overall doing a good job. The stories I see online about how terrible public schools are mostly don't apply here. I know some places are better than others. Inner city schools face so many problems that suburbia doesn't have to deal with. I have coached 500+++ different kids over the years. There are many outstanding public school kids that have very bright futures. Homeschooling is great when the parents are capable and qualified. That's often not the case. My own children are grown adults now. Two went to private school, one to public school. It worked out. Biggest problem with today's students is the parents not parenting well enough. Some kids are spoiled, entitled, and lazy. Not the fault of the school systems. Opportunities are there if a student desires to succeed. My deceased father was a guidance counselor at the largest public school in PA. All inner city kids. Many of those kids are brought into this world with little chance for success. It is mostly because of the parents, or single parent in many cases.

It’s so strange to step back and look back on schooling as an adult. I was a great student. Straight As, overachiever, advanced classes, multiple honor societies, sports, volunteering, awards. I loved school. I was very self motivated and couldn’t comprehend why so many of my peers goofed around so much or could possibly fail assignments. Schoolwork was super easy to me and teachers had to constantly give me busywork to occupy me. I was a good artist so eventually I was allowed to draw or craft. This seemed like a gift to me but in reality it was just to give the teacher a break from all of my questions. I know many people like me ended up becoming bored and resented school but luckily I received a ton of positive reinforcement at home. I don’t resent my entire experience. Everyone got along with me. I had fun. There were definitely some negative things I was exposed to but it made me who I am. I became a chronic people pleaser, was too trusting of authority figures as a child, and became a burnt out overachiever. But that doesn’t bug me as much as some other things. Thinking about how much time was wasted makes me sad. Wasted on waiting for kids to “sit down and behave so we could get started” Wasted on busywork. Wasted on state exams. Wasted learning things that weren’t true. Wasted on an agenda our teachers and parents probably weren’t aware of. Kids should learn to handle stress and failure but we were stressed for no good reason. Over silly things. Things that didn’t matter and didn’t prepare us for the real world. We could have been learning life skills and specialized things like our ancestors did at home with their families for hundreds of years. When I went to college I saw adults who couldn’t cook or clean. A few generations ago preteens were taking care of livestock, growing food, cooking meals, running businesses and building houses. Now we have adults completely reliant on the government for those things. We were doing random things just to stay busy. We were shushed and told there wasn’t enough time to learn what actually interested us. Everyone claims homeschooled children aren’t “socialized” but have you seen how public school kids act? They can’t hold a conversation with an adult, are terrified to make a phone call, and are addicted to screens. Not to mention the mental health issues. I am determined to do better.

When I was a kid, my mom got a a lot of flack for the way she homeschooled us. She almost unschooled us. She made us do math, but not much. We learned a lot of history because she talked about it constantly. But almost nothing was formal. The people who ragged on her were usually school-at-home types. Some of them even had a “school room,” complete with desks and chalkboards. We spent our time with a *profound* amount of boredom. We read encyclopedias for fun. @BowtiedWTRbear read every book in our library, which was vast. My younger brother tore apart computers. I played piano and bass guitar and day dreamed. We didn’t do nearly enough chores and an equal amount of “school work.” By all measures, we should have been abysmal failures. But I’m a nurse and my brothers are engineers and my sister works in accounting, all of us with impressive resumes in our fields. All of us are married with children and happy. Actually, all of us are very much practicing Christians and very conservative politically. We all have three or more kids. The ones who ragged on my mom have less stellar records. I think about the differences a lot. Our family was/is FAR from perfect. We’ve had some family drama and nothing comes easy, it seems. The difference, I think, is that my mom didn’t focus on academics. Her entire goal for us was to grow up to love Jesus. That’s it. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.” “And I I chose the path less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”
